Five months. Genevieve couldn't believe that they'd been married for so long- and yet, at times it felt like only yesterday. She had thought to surprise Julius with a visit at lunch, a picnic packed amongst her saddlebags-- waiting for her in the stables. She had arrived a little early, so she thought she'd stop in for a visit with Penny and Cook, and was making her way toward the kitchen when she heard her mother and a servant talking.
The door was left open just a crack, and Gen stayed back, watching the exchange. She frowned, stepping back into the shadows as her mother left the room, then waited, watching again as Charity pocketed the money. Drawing herself up to her full height (and glad that she had an inch or two on the servant), Gen stepped into the room, making sure to close the door firmly behind her. That done, she turned back to Charity with a false smile. "Oh, hello, Charity! It's so good to see you again- it's been far too long!"
Gen stepped toward the other woman, knocking the plate from her hand and making no pretense about it as it fell to the floor with a crash. "Oh, I'm so sorry, Charity! How clumsy of me!" Gen folded her arms across her chest, blocking Charity's exit and quickly dropping all pretenses. "Now you can't poison my husband today. What did she have you put in there?"
It didn't take long for Charity to crack and by the time Gen had finished, she was seeing red. Oh, she'd speak with her mother soon enough- or perhaps never again. No. She'd give her mother a piece of her mind and then never speak to her again. Oh, Gen was sorely tempted to leave Charity with a black eye- or worse- but resisted, instead, she gave her a piece of her mind before storming out in search of her husband.
