Well, it was easy to see that Matt was a good deal stronger than Penny, though she helped cajole the dog into cooperating with Matt, who he didn't know as well. Penny did her best to help pull him up to relieve the burden on Matt and to ease the dog's obvious distress at the situation.
Once he was safely beside her, Penny threw her arms around the dog, heedless of the fact that both she and Lucky were now filthy and she was in all likelihood ruining her dress. "How did you ever manage to end up stuck out here?" she asked as she hugged him. "I'm so glad you're safe!" Lucky was at least as happy as she, squirming and wagging his tail furiously at the attention.
Penny turned to Matt, kneeling beside her. "I can't thank you enough, Matt," she said sincerely, knowing that she would never have found the dog without him. Without another word or a hint of reservation, she reached over and gave her friend a grateful hug.
