Her mouth was open to tell Rena that the next step was to actually get in, but the woman’s courage seemed to fail her. It tugged on Molly’s heartstrings when Rena – whom she respected highly as a strong and capable woman – became so uncertain of herself.
Molly fell gravely solemn. In all seriousness, she pledged, “I swear on my father’s boat, I won’t let you drown.” It was the strongest promise Molly knew to make. She would not let Rena come to any harm.
“It’s just a couple of steps forward. You can stop any time you want.”
