Molly should have been born a mermaid. She had the personality for it - the same insecurities, vanities, prejudices, and joys as was stereotypical to them. But she hadn't been. She was as miserably landlocked as one captain once suspected her of being...like a selkie without her skin.
A smile crept across Molly's face when Rena made her concession. She was willing to stand. It was more than Molly had allowed herself to hope for at this point. She didn't know why she wanted the other woman to enjoy swimming. She just did. Overwhelmingly, incredibly wished to share this joy with her. Perhaps it was because it was one of the few that Molly had in her life. It used to be something she shared with those she cared about.
Molly knew Rena was uncomfortable with the clothing restrictions necessary to their activity. She didn't want to make it worse. So she splashed a little along the shore, turning her back and looking for river rocks. Molly had never been particularly good at rock-skipping, but she'd been working on it. If she could, she'd find a few for later. She didn't turn back until Rena announced she was ready.
The woman came in up to her ankles, and Molly tried not to laugh. It would have discouraged her. Still, it was funny...if only because Molly could relate to that kind of fear. Rena needed something else to think about besides her nerves. "Here, if I toss these to you, do you think you can set them back on shore?" She held up a particularly flat rock to show Rena what she meant.
