Bernard noticed her accent immediately, and was a little slow to take back the handkerchief, but he was far too ingrained with good manners to show anything but the slightest hesitation.
Besides, this was a pretty girl, and that tended to overrule everything else where Bernard was concerned.
"I am most obliged to you," he said, putting the handkerchief back in his pocket and giving a short bow. "I would have been very sorry to lose it, as it was a present from my mother."
