He had surprised her- he could tell that much. He was amused, and it likely showed on his face. Charles brought a hand up to casually wave away the compliment; he was used to hearing such things, after all. "Of course I do. How could I not flatter a lady so deserving of such praise?"
It was a rhetorical question, of course. He'd never paid her too much attention before, but Charles thought he might try to now, if only for a little while. It could prove to be entertaining, if she showed herself to be more than just a simpering lady of the court- Charles wasn't in the mood for such games. He'd had too many of those women- and while they were nice enough for a one night sort of thing, he'd found that they were often too boring for anything more.
