Molly was happy. The day was going well and she was really starting to enjoy working at the pub. She sidestepped around a patron deep in discussion, dodging an elbow as he used his hands to emphasize his point. Molly just smiled and shook her head. The man was really adamant about the proper way to judge if it will be a dry year - the current topic. She moved to the next table, placing two ales in front of the patrons there. Things weren’t too busy right now, but it was still nice. There were enough people to keep her weaving in and out from the kitchen while still being able to follow some of the conversations. It was good. Working kept Molly from thinking – something she’d been doing far too much of as she traveled. If she could help it, she’d stay off the road for a while. Things were much more pleasant here.
As she went back towards the kitchen to see how the food was coming, she started humming quietly to herself. She was only half aware that the sound she made was auditory. In her mind, she said the words along with the tune – “Me father was the keeper of Eddystone Light. He married a mermaid one fine night.” It was a song Theo used to sing. Then he’d swear up and down that he’d seen a mermaid himself once. And that she was lovely too. So Molly’d ask him what she looked like. He came up with a different description every time. It was a game they played. As she moved, she decided what the mermaid would look like this time – green hair like kelp, shining golden skin, and a blue double tail. As the food still wasn’t quite ready after checking, Molly came back out to see if there was anyone else she could help.
