Julius frowned at Penny's words- his first instinct was to doubt her, to not get his hopes up, but as he thought about it (frowning, eyebrows furrowing in concentration), he realized that, for everything he knew about Penny, he wasn't sure she was even capable of lying.
"She was engaged last night," he insisted, though the argument was a bit more futile this time- even he could see the cracks in his reasoning, now.
"We were going to get married," he added, his voice softer now- he'd never confessed that desire to anyone but Genevieve, but Julius felt a compulsion to explain himself. "I haven't got a thing in the world I could have offered her, but she didn't care. She said she was happy just with me. Should've known just loving someone wasn't enough."
