Bernard hadn't exactly been pleased with lunch that day. His mother had recently been making their cook experiment with new recipes, and today had been squab. Which was really just pigeon with a fancier name. Bernard usually didn't mind trying new things, but he drew the line at pigeon.
He'd eaten a few bites and shuffled the food around on his plate, even dropping some of it in his napkin when he was sure his mother wasn't looking. He didn't want to hurt her feelings or upset her, of course.
But now, only a short hour or two after lunch, his stomach was grumbling. So he made his way to the kitchen, knowing the cook wouldn't have a problem with him finding himself something to eat. He found a nice hunk of cheese in the icebox and pulled it out, deciding it would do quite well with some bread. He was just slicing up the cheese when he heard the door to the kitchen open, and he glanced over, hoping it wasn't his mother, who would definitely question why exactly he needed bread and cheese so soon after lunch.
