"Watchful, yes. Conniving also. She pit us together, you know. Always. There are things I fear I would do to win her favor." Galen slurred some of his words and tried to blink himself back into normal focus. Being intoxicated was a major weakness. Being so in front of a sworn enemy was insane.
He stared down at her arm as she looped it through his own. His thoughts vanished and he ached because he wanted to be her friend. But she could regain her memory and slay him at any moment. Or worse, his Prince. To whom was the only reason he lived.
"We are bloodied enemies. I would kill you justly if you were to near my Prince." He grinned and dipped his head towards hers as they walked. "But in these harsh days no one is really thinking about obliterating each other. Quite the opposite."
He straightened his pose and his face became blank. He gently pulled her arm from his and stopped walking.
"I thought you were waiting to attack us, but you were so lost and in a odd state of confusion. I came back because of the crow. When I went through the portal with my Prince I closed my eyes and I saw the black bird. I knew it was a sign that I have to save you from Nightmare and force you through. I still do not understand it. Trying would make my head hurt." More than it already did.
