When he comes to, his brother and the mysterious girl in red are deep in battle with some sort of monster. He staggers to his feet and manages to pull out the knife from his boot, ready to do battle, if he only knew who or what the enemy actually was.
In his confused state, it appears as if they’re fighting shadows, and maybe they are. He’s not really certain about anything anymore, so for all he knows they could be fighting one another. The words of the demon that they had finally destroyed several months ago still ring in his ears.
It was never really about him or John Winchester, and maybe it was never really about Mary either. However it was always about Sam right from the start, and now it’s over but he’s still paying the price. Isn’t he?
Nothing’s really clear to him anymore expect the fact that he’s signed his own death warrant so that he could hold true to an decades old promise he had made to his father.
A monstrous shadow comes towards him and he can sense the nightmare within t he shadow. He slices the shadow on reflex, and he can hear whatever it is yelp in pain so he keeps hacking at it until the shadow dissipates around him with a gaseous hiss. Sam and the girl are much faster than him and manage to take down several of the shadowy beasts while he manages the one.
When it’s over they drag him towards the Impala, whatever it is that made him act strangely in the night club still making his limbs heavy. Sam pushes him into the back seat and he collapses. However the second he closes his eyes, he immediately falls into fevered dreams of his own death.
