Summary: Max reflects upon Sam.
Long after Sam had left Seattle, Max was still wondering about her doppelganger. Even though she had known about Ben and Alec and her own younger clone, Max had never entertained the idea that perhaps she had had an older clone. Or perhaps, they were twins and not clones of one another. Every spare moment of time that Max has was spent analyzing Sam and what her existence meant to Max.
In many ways they were mirror images of one another. Sam was colder and darker, while Max was warmer and lighter. She put those differences down to Sam’s upbringing at Manticore, where close ties of kinship and family were squashed. Especially after Max’s unit had escaped. Despite the outside differences, they were very much the same. Sam had been willing to destroy Max because it would keep her family safe, and sometimes Max knew that she would be able to sacrifice everything to protect Logan.
Max didn’t understand why she was so focused on Sam; after all she had seen her younger clone at Manticore when Renfro had questioned why her clone was dying when she had survived. That alone made her wonder if Renfro had known about Sam or if like Lydecker she had been in the dark. (Or at least Max assumed Lydecker had been in the dark about Sam, or else he would have known what Max had looked like when he had been hunting for his lost children.) And if Renfro was in the dark about Sam, it caused Max to wonder just how many of them had twins that were out there in the world alone.
She was a realist enough not to fantasize that the possible twins were out there alone and lost, like she had once been. Max hadn’t heard of any other escapees besides those of her unit in 2009. So she knew that any of the other twins that would be out there would have had the full treatment of Manticore’s parenting. They might be colder and harder than even Alec and Sam had been. Or even worse, they might have returned back to some shadowy government organization that didn’t want to kill them but wanted to use them.
In many ways, meeting Sam had caused her to have a whole new set of worries. After all, she knew that Joshua had been cloned by Sandeman and that had led to Isaac. And once she started thinking about that, Max was suddenly gripped by the fear that perhaps each of the transgenics had a mirror image clone out there. One that was perhaps colder and darker just as Isaac, Ben and Sam had been. She took into account that part of the problem with the three twins that she knew about was their upbringing, but it still worried her that each of the twins had been harder, or colder, or darker than the other.
Suddenly thoughts of Sam went from being tinged with the idea that this was her sister and therefore her family, to how many different threats were there out there to the transgenics in Terminal City? And how many of those different threats wore the faces of the people that she fought beside to build their future in the broken world that they lived in? How many more of these twins would White find and use against them just as he had attempted to use Sam to destroy Max?
