Summary: He watches her from the shadows and wonder if The Powers That Be had tricked him so that they could punish him more.
There were certain things that even Angel avoided thinking about, especially things that reminded him that no matter how much he atoned for his sins, he would always be a demon. There would be no perfect moment where he was granted absolution. Those few things that he refused to dwell on tended to cut him through to his very soul and they always made him realize that his soul was nothing more than an elaborate form of punishment for the demon that was always at the back of his mind.
However, as he stood in the shadows and watched her from afar, Angel couldn’t help but dwell on Willow Rosenberg, Buffy’s best friend, even though it was painful. In another world, she would have been his without a doubt. Liam would not have been able to resist the lovely red head and he would have set about a scheme so that she would tumble into his arms. And Angelus would have snatched her from the Slayer’s protection and made her his forever.
As she moved about in the forbidden sunlight, she wore a smile on her face that he never saw at night or in the library. And it reinforced the fact that she would never be his, no matter how much he sought redemption. He could rid the world of every trace of evil, and he’d still be no closer to obtaining his one desire.
He wondered if The Powers That Be had deliberately lured him to Sunnydale with the enticing promise of Buffy Summers. After all, she fit his type and as the Slayer, she offered him a chance of redemption. To the vampire that he had been before he had arrived in Sunnydale, Buffy had been pure temptation. She had shone like pure gold in the sunlight and he could almost taste her innocence.
But it was Willow that had kept Angel in Sunnydale long after he had realized that Buffy was nothing more than fool’s gold. He loved the Slayer, but he could see how they were doomed: a vampire and a Slayer. And his supposed redemption had seemed hollow once he had realized the enormity of the task of protecting the innocents who lived on the Hellmouth. For every monster that he destroyed, with or without Buffy, the Hellmouth spit out three more.
If Buffy had been the lure, then it was obvious to him that Willow was the chain that kept him in Sunnydale. A pure innocent that trusted him and tempted him every time she came near him. She tempted his demon and soul alike, more than Buffy ever would. Angel took an unnecessary breath to calm himself, as he continued to watch Willow as she moved about in the sunlight. Not for the first time since he had seen her, he wished for the mercy of oblivion. Willow was more punishment than the soul that restrained Angelus ever had been and ever would be. She was as distant and forbidden to him as the sun was to him since the night Darla had given him her dark kiss.
