The paint on the walls of the motel is faded and the bedspread looks as if the last time it had seen better days was in the 1970s. However none of that really matters as Dean sets his duffle bag on the floor and collapses on the bed. Lucifer had risen and the apocalypse between Heaven and Hell had really started. He sighs as he sits upright and reflects on what had happened, how he had been played by the angels and how Sam had been played by Ruby.
He still doesn’t know what he’s supposed to do or what his purpose in the apocalypse is other than the fact as the person who started it, he’s somehow supposed to end it. Dean’s never really thought of himself as a hero and right now in this cheap motel room, he realizes that he doesn’t want to be a hero. Not with the weight of the knowledge that he now possesses.
Sam enters the room and Dean looks tiredly at his brother. He wonders what the great John Winchester would do if he had known about Sam and the reason Mary had been killed. Would John have sacrificed Sam to save the world? Dean sighs and doesn’t say anything to his brother, there’s no way that he can express what he’s feeling. Instead he walks into the bathroom and locks the flimsy lock.
He’s tired and he feels incredibly filthy as if he’s covered in blood and dirt and grime from a hard hunt. Escaping Lucifer had been easy; the bastard was intent on making a grand entrance, making it easy for Dean to drag Sam away to the Impala and then safety. Although who knows how long they’ll be safe with Lucifer walking the earth.
Dean turns on the hot water in the shower and slowly removes his clothes. He feels tired and battle weary already and the battle hasn’t even begun. When he steps under the spray, the water is scalding hot and he welcomes the pain. Eventually when the hot water turns cold, he steps out of the shower and is confronted by the sight of Castiel sitting on the toilet waiting for him.
For a moment, Dean wants nothing more than to hit the angel. He knows that it’s not Castiel’s fault, he was only being a good solider just like Dean has been all of these years. But at the same time, he’s furious at the angel just for being an angel. He’s also angry for the fact that he’s now faced with the fact that he has to become a hero and that in the upcoming war, if Zachariah is to believed, it is up to Dean to save humanity from Lucifer.
