They had not been wrong in pointing out that the cave system she and Verity were to investigate was off the beaten track. It was off any track whatsoever. Dense vegetation stood in the way, rocky formations, an uphill hike in the dark. At least there was enough moonlight that they didn't need to use the flash-lights they had brought. Cameron didn't like to bother with them if she didn't have to, they drew too much attention, they were too obvious. It there was anything nasty out here in the darkness with them then she didn't want it to have such an obvious focal point.
It was out of this same cautious protectiveness that she waded through the undergrowth first. Of course her partner for the excursion was just as capable, it wasn't about that, it was just that Cameron felt better when she felt in control. Even now, after so long working alongside other slayers, she chaffed at not being in control of a situation, a symptom of her upbringing and one that made for a great solo slayer but not such a great team player.
They had been hiking for more than an hour and closing in on their destination when she stopped.
"Verity." Cameron stood on a rocky outcropping turning her head a little, looking off to the right. Perhaps she was paranoid. Overly cautious. Every rustle of leaves and every crackle of dry twigs made her jump to attention. "I don't think we're alone."
