The lights had gone out. Sherlock had cursed in a most ungentlemanly manner as the sudden darkness rendered him completely blind. The ocean was hardly luminous and apparently it was a complete power cut because nothing was giving any indication that it was on. No little lights anywhere, no hum of electricity, just the muffled complaints of people nearby and random thumps of what he could only imagine were people walking into walls, doors and whatever didn't get out of their way.
But still, Sherlock could find his own door. He would be able to find it under any circumstance, that wasn't what troubled him. What troubled him was what lay on the other side of the door.
Understandably things between himself and John had been a little on the tense side for a few days. Sherlock had been panicked about Moriarty's return and John, similarly, had been rather displeased with the new situation. Between them they were not dealing well, but the problem was they weren't dealing with it together. Sherlock knew enough about relationships (he picked up one or two things reading the magazines Molly had kept around her flat) to know that he should probably discuss what was bothering him and encourage John to share his feelings on the matter as well. But the things that were bothering Sherlock made him feel quite sick and he didn't know how to deal with it without crying about how unfair it all was like a spoiled child. Which would help neither of them. It was his turn to look after John, but God, he was being terrible about it.
The room was silent. With his eyes now as adjusted to the crushing darkness as they were ever going to be, Sherlock could just make out the shape of his partner on the bed. John was angry which meant he wasn't sleeping. He was just doing a poor job of pretending. Opening and closing the door made barely a sound, but Sherlock was almost certain John knew he was there. They were attuned to each other. They were as close as two people could be.
Sherlock closed his eyes and listened.
