Summary: After being tossed off the train Regina runs into a young girl in the forest.
Status: Incomplete
The train had stopped once again. Regina would have been over enthused if it hadn’t been for the fact that it was a winter wonderland outside. Not to mention that it looked as if their stop had been in the middle of a forest. Henry would undoubtedly want to go outdoors and play in the snow and Emma Swan with him. Try as she might, Regina knew that forcing Henry to do what she wanted wasn’t going to work. Hell, she’d thought of getting her magic back and then woke the following morning with memories. Memories that left a deep sadness in the pit of her stomach. Just thinking about them brought tears to her eyes. She’d used magic to get Henry back. She’d done the one thing that she always hated her mother doing. Using magic for discipline and to keep her in line. As much as it pained her to admit it, Rumple had been right. Try as she might to not become her mother, she had. The mother who she’d used magic against in order to push her through a mirror. An act that still pained her to this day. Because despite all her mothers faults Regina did still love her. Regina just didn’t understand why her mother couldn’t have let her be happy for once. To try and make up for what she had done in her future, Regina chose to continue giving Henry space. He would come to her when he wanted to. No sooner had she made the decision to get out and explore this world they’d stopped in that everyone who was still on board was tossed out. Groaning she was quite angry that the train had seen fit to deposit them all out in the cold. It was miserable. The only upside was that she was at least wearing a pair of boots and coat from the baggage car. Otherwise, there was no doubt she’d be suffering from hypothermia. Wandering away from the train she began looking for someplace that she could build a fire. It would have been so much easier if she had her magic back but she’d decided to hold off. Not certain whether she should regain it or not. As she trudged through the snow pushing branches out of the way she saw something from the corner of her eye. Regina was unsure of what she should do. Should she run or should she just stand still? Just as she was going to make a decision, the movement to her left took on the shape of a human body. A small sigh of relief escaped her lips but her body did not release the tension. If the person approaching turned out to be a threat, Regina would use what physical capabilities she possessed to defend herself. For now she would just have to wait. _______ Thanks to Buffy’s warning about the train’s propensity to kick people out at midnight when it got to a new location, Thalia had been prepared for it. She’d felt silly sitting in her room wearing her parka and boots every night at midnight, but her efforts had been vindicated when the train had lurched and sent her flying from her bed...into a snow drift. She had no idea where any of the other demigods were, though, so she made her way through the snowy forest, her silvery parka making her melt into the background - almost, anyway; her jeans weren’t exactly blending into the snow. She was soundless as she moved through the snow, and when she came across another person, she reached for her bow. Only when she recognised the woman as someone she’d seen around the train did she relax slightly. “Hey,” she greeted as she came into view. “I don’t suppose you’ve seen a bunch of teenagers running around?” _____ Regina relaxed ever so slightly when she noticed that the person was in fact a young girl. She vaguely recognised her as someone from the train. The train might have many cars but there were times it was impossible to not run across someone, even if that person was someone you’d rather not run into. It was just the dilemma’s one faced being confined to a train. “I’m sorry, dear. I haven’t seen them.” Regina answered. Everyone had been thrown off and it was up to the train where they landed. She hadn’t stuck around long enough when she’d been thrown out to even notice if the teenagers the girl sought were there. Her only thought being to find a place she could build a fire at the time. “They might have gone off in search of a place or kindling to weather this cold. Much like what I am trying to do … without much success.” Something about this place unnerved her. It was almost as if there was a powerful force in the air threatening any who dared defy it. Only once before did she have a feeling like this but never to this extent. Though she kept this fear to herself because it wouldn’t do for others, especially her enemies, to find out that even she could be unsettled. No, she had to remain the purest example of confidence, lest someone exploit her fear to bring her down. _________ Thalia frowned, glancing around the area with a practiced eye. It was clear that she was in her element here, and if she were similarly unnerved by the presence in the forest, she didn’t show it. “Well, it’s not going to happen here; the ground and the wood are too wet.” The woman had a point, though. Even if Thalia weren’t feeling the cold yet, others might be, and if she could find a good place to set up camp or at least a fire, then she might find the others. She started to head off, then paused. Even if she didn’t know the older woman, and even if the woman weren’t exactly giving out warm fuzzy vibes, she didn’t want to leave anyone to have to fend for themselves. “I’m Thalia,” she offered. “Wanna come with me?” _________ Regina refrained from making a comment. All ready aware that the ground where they currently stood was too wet to build a fire. She hadn’t come upon anything that was remotely dry in her travels so far. But the last thing the young teenager needed was to deal with a bitchy former Queen in the middle of a forest. As the girl turned to leave, Regina began looking in what direction she herself would continue on. It obvious that the two would continue on with their searching. Which is why when the young girl turned around and offered up her name and asked if she wanted to go along, she was startled momentarily. She hadn’t expected to be given a name let alone an invitation. The mother inside of her perked up at this exact moment. Sure, she had been a pretty strict mother when it came to Henry, but that didn’t mean that she didn’t worry about him or have motherly tendencies to other children. And though it was fairly obvious that the girl could handle herself, that small part of Regina wanted to ensure that at least the girl got somewhere safe for the night. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, dear. I’m Regina and I think I will join you. Better to travel in pairs.” __________ “I always thought so,” Thalia replied with a smile. She studied the woman for a moment, trying to figure her out. Regina’s reaction to Thalia’s offer suggested that she wasn’t used to people being nice to her. Thalia wondered why. There was probably time to find out, though. So far, there was no sign of anyone - or anything - else within eyesight or hearing distance. “Gods, this is cold,” she remarked as they started heading down what appeared to be a trail. “Reminds me of Siberia.” It was a good thing that the train had brought her her Hunter’s parka and boots amongst the pile of coats and boots it had put in people’s rooms. Thalia never really felt cold while bundled up in Artemis’s specially created clothing, though it did make her feel homesick for the days she’d been with the goddess. _________ Regina smiled back in response. She was well aware that the young girl seemed to be studying her but chose to not make a comment on it. These days she found it a common occurrence. Those who knew her sizing her up to see what her game was. Or those who didn’t know her trying to figure out why she responded the way she did. It was something that she’d just gotten used to no matter how much it might spark up annoyance within her. As they began walking down a trail, Regina kept her eyes peeled for anything. Whether it be another human or whatever creatures seemed to lurk in this forest. She might be powerless to stop either from harming them but she could alert Thalia who at least seemed prepared to fight whatever came their way. Cold was a bit of an understatement. More along the lines of frigid. It never quite got this cold in Storybrooke but Regina assumed that was due to the nature of the curse. The weather was close to what it was elsewhere in the world but not exact. This land they’d found themselves stopped in reminded her of a few of the winters back in fairytale land. “This cold reminds of a place that I lived long ago.” ________ So far, there wasn’t anything either friendly or otherwise to be seen, but Thalia kept alert anyways. Despite the cold, she felt more comfortable here than on the train. The woods were her element, and she felt safer here - no matter what else might be out there - than on the train. “Yeah? Where’s that?” Thalia asked. The woman beside her looked older, but not old enough to be saying anything was long ago in relation to herself. Then again, Thalia wasn’t in any position to judge the age of anyone, given that she herself was immortal. ________ |
