Jem still wasn’t entirely sure how he felt about this Shanghai, but he was trying to make the most of his time in the city regardless. The train was stifling and after so many weeks being stuck inside he found himself wanting to be in his cabin less and less, even if being in China was in many ways emotionally draining for him. He refused to become some sort of shut in. He’d already ventured out a few times with Will and then once by himself the other night when he had been seeking solitude. This time however he was in the mood for some company and since his restless parabatai was already off doing God only knew what, Jem had decided to extend an invite to Tessa. Despite her past reassurances, it bothered him that he had not been at his best during many of their previous interactions on the train and he almost felt compelled to make it up to her. Her enthusiastic acceptance made him smile and he hurried to ready himself to go out. That morning when Jem had woken up, he had found a few crumpled bills wrapped in a piece of paper left on his bedside table. Even bleary-eyed and still half asleep he could easily recognize Will’s handwriting. Upon further inspection he had found the note to contain the address to a local music shop. His parabatai had evidently left him some of his infamous poker winnings to replace his broken violin string. It was a thoughtful gesture and while both touched and appreciative, Jem did not relish the fact that Will had put himself into a rather precarious situation to obtain these funds. As he was leaving to go and meet with Tessa he quickly slipped the money and the note into his pocket, resolving to return the favor while he was out. New cane in hand, he headed next door to Tessa’s room and knocked softly on the door, hoping that she didn’t mind the short notice. As apprehensive as he had been prior to their arrival in Shanghai, Jem was looking forward to spending the evening in the city with her. |
