Huh
Characters: Alice, Keleiois
When: Monday evening
Location: rear parlor car
Warnings/Rating: None anticipated
Summary: Alice ponders
Status: Complete

Having exhausted every avenue, Alice was stumped. Clearly the train was the trap everyone had insisted it was, but she was sure there had to be something someone had somehow missed. Still, with the things it supposedly could do and the things she knew it could do, she supposed it was likely it would take a greater witch than herself to work it out. After all, if everyone had tried and everyone had failed, why should she be the special star that succeeded?

She’d heard there was a stop in China, but apparently no one knew when. Soon some had said. It could be tomorrow or three weeks from then. But people were guessing it was soon. The condition of the place would remain to be seen, however, and Alice simply hoped it was decent.

She’d sat in when they were working the translation charm, mostly to see if it was the one she already knew, or if there was one someone else had come up with that worked better. She’d offered assistance as well, feeling it her obligation as one of the older representatives from her world -- and who would have thought that 32 was old?

Yesterday, she’d tracked down Lily. She’d noticed the absence of Snape’s name from the door it had been on, and she was curious. Given the stories she’d heard about the man though, she couldn’t be too fussed he was gone -- save for Lily’s sake. Still, the younger witch was tough and Alice had every confidence Lily would conquer this setback as she tackled all things in life.

As for herself … she was damnwell out of ideas. She could read, she guessed. Or prowl around and make friends. Or go track down her son. Or … something. She guessed she could go sit outside and watch the darkness for a bit. For the time being though, she parked her rear solidly in a seat in the back parlor car while she considered her options.

Keleios had left her cabin to stretch her legs for a bit. She'd been spending a lot of time with Sam Winchester, helping him exercise his mental shielding, and they were making progress, but sometimes rest was just as helpful as exercise. So she left him some space, and took a walk to clear her own head.

Truth be told, the tunnel had bothered her just as much as it had bothered Sam, in spite of her ability to see in the dark. She too would be glad when the train came to a halt.

She smiled at the woman seated in the parlor car as she entered with her journal, nodding a polite greeting as she searched for a place to sit.

Alice returned the nod, but assumed it was nothing more than the simple polite acknowledgement of two strangers who happened to cross paths in a common area of a situation they'd both been unwillingly dragged into.

While she herself wasn't antisocial, she'd learned that enough people were that sometimes it wasn't worth the effort of attempting to start up a conversation. Given that this woman seemed to have something that looked more like a journal than a book (though Alice guessed it really could go either way), she reasoned the woman had come to find a quieter place to compose her thoughts, and if that was the case, Alice wasn't inclined to interrupt.

Still, as she herself hadn't yet worked out what she wanted to do, she remained in her seat as she continued to review her options. At this rate though ... she was going to end up spending a significant amount of time just considering what she wanted to do. A slight smile crossed her lips at her thoughts before she shook her head slightly.

Keleios found a seat nearby, but left her journal lying across her lap. She'd had no dreams yet that compelled her to write or speak them, other than the dreams she'd already shared with Sam. She supposed she would have more to write about once they had actually reached another depot, but who knew when that might be? Soon was a subjective turn.

"Are you waiting for someone?"

Alice shook her head to the question. “Just myself, if anyone,” she replied, a slightly impish smile briefly crossing her lips. “I was just considering my options and whether or not it’s worth beating my head against that damn wall up front. Literally or figuratively,” she added, her eyes briefly sparkling with mirth. “And then I was considering my options if I didn’t opt to engage in an act of futility.”

It wasn’t that she didn’t believe them when they said there was no way out. She just wanted to try everything for herself, that was all.

Still, she shrugged and cocked her head. “I’m Alice,” she introduced herself. “I haven’t been here very long, but long enough to know I’m not fond of this place. What about you?”

"You do a lot of thinking," Keleios observed, her tone light, and jesting. "But then, sometimes there's not much else to do, is there?" She smiled. "I am Keleios. I've been here for about three or four months, with a few hiccups along the way. I'm not sure anybody's all that fond of it. But from what I hear, most of us have seen worse."

"Better to think than to blindly accept," Alice replied. She didn't mean it as an insult and hoped the woman didn't take it that way. She imagined everyone here had at least considered things before making a decision to just ... accept their fate. "But ... yes. I've been thinking pretty much non stop since I've arrived. It hasn't panned out to much though. Nothing makes as much sense as it should. Everything I manage to discover that might make sense only raises more questions. It's exhausting." And to top that all off, her husband wasn't here.

She shrugged. She'd seen worse, and apparently she was going to get to see even worse than that when she get home. "It's more the principle of it," Alice replied. "The being kidnapped, and having things done to you you can't avoid. The fact we might have seen worse doesn't negate the issue of seeing exposed to further atrocities."

Keleios nodded. She could not always change her circumstances, but that didn't mean she hadn't tried to do so before she had accepted them. Sometimes all there was left was to make due. "Sometimes it does seem a bit like adding insult to injury."

Her brows lifted slightly, and she wondered if there was more coming. When that seemed to be the extent of the other woman's commentary, Alice nodded slightly before she pushed up from her seat.

"Well, it was lovely to meet you," she began as she arched her back to stretch it. "But I suppose I should abandon just thinking and see what sort of trouble I can stir up here."

With a soft smile and a little wave, Alice moved to head out of the room.
