In the time it took him to blink Peter was suddenly aware of the van moving beneath his feet, and that didn't make sense, because they weren't ready to go yet. It was another moment before he realized that he wasn't in the van, that the wooden furniture and elaborate decor were probably as far from the inside of the surveillance van as it was possible to get. The beds were a dead give away and Peter couldn't help a slight feeling of nausea as he tried to make sense of things. He would have known if he had fallen asleep, it wasn't something that he did when he was working. There had been times when he powered through a lot more than just what they'd done that day. It was the only answer that made sense though, unless he'd suddenly lost it. Peter shook his head to clear it, and patted down his pockets to be sure thath he had everything that he should. The weight of his gun was supremely reassuring but it was his phone that he reached for first. No reception, he realized as he cursed silently to himself. It was far from the only time the phone had ever let him down but it was one of the most disconcerting. Taking another moment to feel his head for any kind of bump or injury, he let his eyes stray around the room. Nothing hurt, but that didn't necessarily indicate that everything was fine. His attention was caught, albeit distractedly, by some electronics on a bed, and after another cursory glance to be sure that he was alone, Peter reached for the other phone, hoping for a signal as he turned it on. The message that played before Peter could even check for bars didn't do much to actually disconcert him. It sounded ridiculous, like something from some fantasy game, or one of those Murder Mystery dinners that Elizabeth had been asked to cater once, that she had told him about later. Nothing about this felt right to him, and nothing about it fit together. It was too vivid for him to be able to believe that he'd fallen asleep, he didn't dream like that. There was the possibility that he had been drugged but he couldn't quite believe that either. But he had his badge still, and his gun, and most likely his wits, and if anything had actually happened then there were two other people in the van that he needed to account for, nevermind the fact that Neal was currently off his leash. With a breath to steady himself, and a hand on his gun just in case, Peter sidled up to the door and cracked it open. The hallway was narrow and as far as he could tell, empty, so he pushed it open the rest of the way and stepped out, on guard. |
