Tired
Characters: Simon, Amy
When: Sunday evening
Location: Observation car
Warnings/Rating: Angst and sad
Summary: Simon is getting all worn out
Status: Complete
Simon was tired. He was tired physically, and he was worn out emotionally. He was confused, and he wasn't sure the latest victim was actually a murder. Who could do that to someone? Suck all the moisture out of them to leave them a husk? It was different, too, because she was a vampire -- weren't they supposed to be able to stand up to things? Or weren't they only prone to being staked or burned? Maybe it varied; he only knew legends, and legends could be wrong. But what was killing him was the kid. Nearly everyone else who'd turned up dead, he was only vaguely familiar with. Maxine though ... everyone knew Maxine. She'd been a presence on the train, and he didn't think there was anyone here who hadn't known her, at least a little. He hadn't known her well, but he'd seen her. Heard her. Seen how people had taken to her. Funny how the smallest victim was having the biggest impact. He'd meant to get in touch with the other doctors, to see how it had gone, but he hadn't been able to make himself ask. It was bad enough knowing she'd been among the victims. He'd poured himself a drink from the diminishing supply of liquor and retreated with it to the observation car. He'd seen the destruction in the touring car when he'd passed through, and he wondered who'd done that. It looked like someone had taken a machete to one of the cars, but as far as he was aware, there wasn't anything like that on board. Well, he didn't need another mystery to solve right now, so he kept on walking. Settling down into one of the seats, he fixed his gaze on the passing scenery. He didn't really see any of it, but he tried to. He tried to see anything that would get his mind off all the death. All the death that none of them could do anything about. The death that they couldn't seem to stop, no matter what they did. No matter how much people patrolled, no matter how much they emphasized safety in numbers. Simon braced an elbow against the arm of his chair, rubbing at his temples before he took a sip of his drink. This was ... obscene. Vulgar. There were stronger words, he knew, but they wouldn't come to him just then. He was disgusted and sickened, and he just wanted it to end. He wanted someone to find something, some clue, something to go on to find whoever -- or whatever -- was doing this. He just didn't think that was going to happen. |
