WHO: Percy Jackson and Tidus (!dice)
WHAT: Roommates meeting!
WHERE: Percy and Tidus's room (R-406)
WHEN: Thursday evening
WARNINGS: None so far, will update if necessary.

After seeing the message on the network from the person who had apparently been assigned his new roommate, Percy reluctantly tore himself from the open air observation car and made his way back to his room. He wasn't against having a roommate, exactly, and the guy seemed alright, really. And something he had said (had he said he found out he was a dream?) made Percy wonder if maybe this guy's life had been just as weird as his. Although probably in a totally different way.

Making sure Riptide was safely in pen form before he entered the room, he opened the door and stepped in, hands in his pockets, looking the most he could like a normal sixteen year old boy. Which he could, mostly. The only really strange thing about his appearance, after all, was the grey streak in his hair from the stress of literally holding up the sky, and surely that could have a much more normal explanation. Maybe.

"Hey," he said, holding out a hand to the other boy, "I'm Percy Jackson."

The train itself was a lot different than anything he had ever seen before. The decorations were definitely foreign, as were some of the machines inside, but most were familiar enough that he could fairly easily figure out their functions. There had been some exploring (because what else was there to do?), there had been some eating (because what else was there to do?), there had been some swimming (because...well, you get the picture). By that point, he had exhausted his options and decided to take it easy in the room with his name on the door. Tidus was laying on his bed, feet toward the headboard. He had made a game of tossing his blitzball against the wall and catching it as it bounced back. Kid's stuff, but he didn't much care.

He heard the name shortly while the ball was bouncing from the wall. In one fluid motion, Tidus caught it, did a backwards somersault, and landed on his feet off the end of the bed. (Showing off? Oh, hell yes, he was.) He turned toward Percy and gave a crooked grin, tipping his chin briefly in greeting. "Hey. Tidus." He grabbed the outstretched hand and gave a firm shake. Once he had let go of the hand, the blond tossed the ball between both of his. "So, you have a sword pen?"

Percy grinned at his little maneuver, wondering if he should show him something of his own. But this wasn't a pissing contest (yet, anyway), so he simply shook his hand back firmly.

"Yup, I sure do."

He took Riptide from his jeans pocket - looking like a simple blue bic pen, flipped it around so that Tidus could see it, then with a simple flick of his wrist, the pen transformed into a three-foot long sword of shining Celestial Bronze.

"This is Riptide, or Anaklusmos in Ancient Greek. The sword of Heracles..."

He grinned.

"Cool, isn't it?"

“Whoa!” Tidus took a jump back when the pen transformed. Even though Percy had told him that the pen turned into a sword, it still made him jump to actually see it happening. In his homeworld, they could make their weapons appear and disappear at will, but he never thought about disguising them. That was really convenient. “I have no idea what an Anaklutzus or Heraclee are, but that’s awesome, man.”

Oh, speaking of swords. “Want to see mine?” Tidus took a step back and held out his hand. Brotherhood, a broadsword, appeared in it. Out of habit, he slashed at the empty air before holding it parallel to the ground for Percy’s inspection. The sword itself appeared to be made out of water, complete with a bubbling effect near its hilt and being of a translucent material.

Percy wasn't surprised he didn't know the ancient Greek name for his sword, but he didn't know who Heracles was? Really? He cocked his head a bit like a dog as he looked closer at him.

"I mean...Heracles, that's Greek for Hercules, of course."

Maybe he knew him better that way? After all, there was that stupid Disney movie and everything.

"He's a demigod, like me, a great hero who saved a lot of people."

Even if he wasn't all that nice to Zoë, he still did some cool things. Of course it would have been better if "being a jerk" hadn't been one of them.

"Oh, wow!," he exclaimed, taking a step closer to examine the sword. "That's awesome. And it looks...like it's made of water. How - how does that work?"

"What's Greek? Or...demigod?" Tidus gave a shrug, nonplussed. The latter explanation made him curious. He knit his brow and wet his lips. "Demigods are heroes? So, like...am I a demigod, then?" And, if demigods were heroes, what were gods gods? Whoa. Trippy.

Tidus was pleased as hell at the approval. "I have no idea," he responded cheerfully. "It was forged with magic, I think. It's really useful against lightning-based fiends. A friend gave it to me." Yeah, yeah! He had a cool sword, too! "We found a lot of different weapons, but this one's my favorite."

"Seriously?"

Percy raised an eyebrow. He didn't know what Greek was? Had he never had a gyro? Olives? Had he never seen the Olympics?

"Where in the world are you from, anyway? Greek is...well, it's an ancient culture. Greece. And demigods are...well, half God. Like...my father is the god of the Sea. Poseidon. So I'm a demigod. But we're not all heroes. I mean, some of us are pretty useless, or some of us turn evil. Some of us die before we get a chance to do anything - monsters are always after us."

His eyes flickered to the other boy's sword, and he couldn't help but smile. "That's awesome. I wouldn't call Thalia a lightning-based fiend, though. She'd probably beat you up. Or shoot an arrow in your butt."

"Zanarkand," he responded instantly. Tidus winced a little and had to bite down the usual excuse that followed. "Well, Spira, I guess." He gave a shrug at that. Percy probably didn't know what either were, so he decided to skim over it in favor of easier things to understand. "So gods are kind of like the fayth in Spira," he mused aloud. "Except they don't actually...have sex with...well, anyway." Cough.

"Oh, Thalia?" That was the girl in the pool car, right? "She seemed pretty tough. No, fiends are...well, they're monsters."

"I...have no idea where either of those are," he laughed. "Sorry. Is that on Earth, even? I mean, it's totally possible I'm just stupid, I was never great in school."

A smile curled his lips.

"Yeah, our Gods are...uh...well, they kind of like to do a lot of hooking up with mortals. Their wives often get a little pissed when they do. I mean, Amphitrite didn't like me much the few times we've met. And I mean, I guess that's understandable."

He raised an eyebrow, looking amused.

"Thalia was in the pool car? What was she doing? Trying to swim? She's not usually a huge fan of water. But yeah...she's like me. Daughter of Zeus, the God of the skies."

His expression darkened, then.

"Yeah. Monsters. We have lots of them, too."

People not knowing where he was from was not entirely uncommon. If Percy knew Thalia, and Thalia hadn't known Spira, then it only made sense. "Don't know what Earth is, but Spira's it's own world." He gave a shrug. "Probably explains why I have no idea what you're talking about with the Greek stuff."

Okay, now he was just imagining the fayth, and--cringing. No, no, no. That was a mental image he didn't need to have. "Yeah, no one wants their husband or wife to be with someone else." It surprised him that the gods' wives stayed with them for that, but--well, maybe things were different for gods. He had no idea.

"Dunno. Just passing through, I guess." God of the skies. God of water. Weird. Moving on--"Yeah, we call them fiends. They're supposed to be, um..." He squinted. How best to describe them to someone who probably didn't know summoners? "They're souls who weren't properly sent on to the afterlife."

It's own world? Even with all the strange things Percy had seen in his life - and there was plenty strange - he had never heard of anyone from another planet, or someone who didn't know what Earth was. This train was its own special type of cracked, apparently.

"I...uh, okay. Yeah...that would do it."

That topic was an uncomfortable one, especially after that monster Bill had made a point to rub into him that he was, as he had put it, a bastard.

"Yeah...I mean, I guess I can understand where they're coming from, but you know, it's not my fault. I didn't ask for it, you know. I mean, I would be glad if none of this..."

He trailed off as he said it, realizing even as the words were coming out that it wasn't true. He wouldn't rather still be thinking of himself as some sort of loser who could barely read, couldn't concentrate on anything, and got kicked out of a new school every year. He didn't want that life back. The new life he had found, as dangerous as it was - it was the life he belonged in.

"No, actually, I love my life. Maybe that's screwed up, but I'm happier than I ever have been, ever."

He paused a moment, confused by those words.

"Weren't...properly sent on?"

He worked that over in his mind for some time, trying to understand what that meant.

"What...what does that mean?"

"Nah, you can't." He had his own parent problems--not that he was fathered by a god in the same sense that Percy was. "I get it, kind of. My dad was this really huge deal back home, and it made things pretty hard at home." He shrugged. And, when Jecht disappeared, his mom gave up on life shortly after. "Every family's got something, you know?" Non-judging, in other words.

Ah, yeah, the sending. Tidus puffed his cheeks. "It's...pretty long and complicated." Idly, he scratched the back of his head. "But, uh, the simple version is that people in Spira who die without accepting death wander around the planet jealous of the living. Their envy turns into resentment and hate, and they turn into fiends. Summoners do this thing called the Sending, which guides the unsent souls to the Farplane--that's the afterlife--before that can happen."

"Yeah, that's true. And every family's really strange in its own way, too. I never even met my dad until I was twelve," he shrugged, unsure why he felt the need to tell him that, but feeling it all the same.

"Ohhhhh, okay. See, that's something that Nico would get way better than I do. He's a friend of mine, his dad's God of the Underworld. But my question...why would they not simply accept death? I mean, the alternative sounds pretty miserable."

"It's..." Complicated? Yeah, understatement. Tidus let Brotherhood disappear into thin air and plopped back down on his bed. "It can be a lot of things, I guess. If you're not ready to die when you do, you're not gonna be happy when it happens, you know? It's usually when someone dies in a violent way. Like Sin attacking them or something." Oh, right, Sin. That was another explanation upon itself.

"Um, Sin's, like...Sin's this huge monster that terrorized Spira for a thousand years. A lot of the people who become fiends were killed by Sin. There's all these rules about how you can live and atone for your ancestors' sins, and I think people who get killed but feel like they've been living the way they're supposed to get angry about it."

"So this...'Sin', only kills bad people?"

Percy'd never known a monster who actually discriminated between good people and bad people. Or a monster that killed bad people at all, actually.

"Why didn't anyone kill it?"

"Sin kills anyone," Tidus corrected. "There was this religion called Yevon that claimed that people could atone for their ancestors' wicked ways if they didn't use the forbidden machina"--his voice was dripping with disdain as he said the words, complete with airquotes--"but it was all a bunch of bull. People still believed it, which is why they would get upset that they died if they had followed Yevon's teachings."

He leaned back on his palms. "People tried. The only way they knew how to for a long time was through the Final Summoning. Someone a summoner loved would sacrifice themselves, and it was said that, if the bond were strong enough, the summoner could defeat Sin with the Final Aeon. But, we discovered that the Final Aeon then became Sin, so it was this endless cycle." Tidus offered a lopsided smirk. "We did end up killing him, though."

Percy tried to make sense of this strange world, but the more he spoke, the more confused he became. And when he became confused, his attention usually began to wander. Not his fault - he was ADHD after all. But he forced himself to listen, to try to understand, even with all the strange words and concepts.

"So...how did you like that?"

He liked battle stories.

It didn't help that Tidus wasn't explaining what everything was, either. He barreled on with the information without thinking that, yes, Percy was from a different reality and wouldn't necessarily know everything he was babbling about.

"Well, we had to beat my dad, so..." He gave a shrug. It was what it was. "And then Yuna had to watch her fayth all die to kill Yevon." Big tick thing. Ick. "It was hard, but, well...I had mixed feelings." Particularly because it meant he would "die" and thus be leaving Yuna.

That was something Percy definitely understood - the way that battles often ended leaving you wondering exactly who won.

He shifted a little, glancing down at the floor. "Well..." He hesitated. "Didn't have much of a choice. It was either kill Sin once and for all and disappear from Spira, or stay in Spira to be with Yuna but keep Sin there with no means of defeating it in the future. The fayth wanted to stop dreaming, so..."

Yet another thing he didn't think to explain.

"Huh, okay, back up," Percy said, holding up his hands. "I'm not following. Who are the fayth? And...why did they want to stop dreaming?"

He was okay with strange things. He'd heard of a thousand strange things. But these weren't his strange things, and it was taking him just a second to understand exactly what was going on, here.

Errr, right. Getting ahead of himself again. Tidus puffed his cheeks. "The fayth were people from Zanarkand who volunteered to undergo this ritual that took their souls from their body when they were still alive and had their souls sealed into statues. Their power lets a summoner use the power of pyreflies--I don't know how to explain those, they're all spiritual energy and stuff--but they use the pyreflies to create the aeons or other stuff. Aeons are powerful creatures that summoners can use to help them fight. So, like, when they pray at the temples..."

Pause. Tidus smiled apologetically. "Sorry, getting ahead of myself. A thousand years ago, there was a war in Spira between Zanarkand and Bevelle. Yu Yevon was the leader and was losing, so he turned the people into fayth and created this dream version of Zanarkand. That's where I'm from." Yes, from dream Zanarkand. "Then, he created Sin, who was...I think the armor around it? It's confusing." Especially when Sin was in dream Zanarkand, but that was his own fault, wasn't it? "Anyway. So Yevon's daughter, Yunalesca, and her husband, Zaon, went to stop Sin. Zaon was turned into the Final Aeon as a means to defeat Sin. Yunalesca died, and Yevon turned Zaon into a new Sin. This process repeated over and over again with new summoners and guardians. When Sin would be defeated, there was this thing called the Calm, which was the time between Sin's death and the birth of a new one. So, like, the Spirans would basically beg summoners to go die so they could have the Calm." He sounded bitter about that.

But, circling back. "So, uh, where I come in. The fayth were tired of dreaming after a thousand years of it. They asked me to destroy Yu Yevon so they could finally sleep. When Yevon was defeated, the fayth were free to enter the Farplane--that's the afterlife. But, because they did, that meant that dream Zanarkand and I disappeared, because no one could summon us." He made a face. "But, if that's the case, I don't know how it's possible that I'm here." It was all very confusing.

"Your whole world is...a dream? You live in a dream?"

He looked confused at all the names and explanations, but he'd heard weird stuff before. Lots of weird stuff.

"Well, I guess it's good you're here, though? I mean, I'm pretty sure this isn't a dream, anyway."

He sat on his bed, capping Riptide and putting the pen back in his pocket.

"What do you do for fun, when you're not fighting?"

"No, no." He shook his head. "My Zanarkand was a dream. Spira wasn't. The people who became the fayth were from Spira a thousand years before I got there and were dreaming up my Zanarkand--and, uh, me. In the real Spira, Zanarkand was ruins." Tidus paused. "I don't even fully get it, if that makes you feel better."

When he wasn't fighting? Tidus gave an amused grin. "Play a whole lot of blitzball," he returned cheerfully. "I like to keep active, you know? That was...most of my life, really."

"So...you're a dream?"

Ok, this was just weird.

"Yeah...I...really don't get it at all," he said with a shrug. But that was okay. Percy was pretty sure things in his world didn't all make a great deal of sense to outsiders, either.

"What's blitzball?" he asked with a grin. "Sounds fun. Can you teach me?"

"Yeah, I'm a dream." He gave a sigh and a helpless shrug. "Or...was. I don't know what the hell I am now."

Anyway.

"Blitzball?" That brought a wide grin on his face. Tidus reached over to grab his ball and tossed it over to Percy. "Blitzball. Two teams, with five players and a goalkeeper. You play in a blitzsphere, which is entirely made of water. You want to try to kick that"--he pointed to the ball--"into the other team's goal. The other team will try to tackle you or take the ball to keep you from doing that, but you can throw the ball to a teammate whenever."

Teach him? That made him grin wider. "Hell yeah. The pool here will work enough to show the basics."
