Hanna had never been confined in one place for so long. Their cabin in the forest had been small, yes, but she'd never been trapped there, not like she was here. She knew some of the others could get off the train, and she wished that she could as well. She didn't know if they could take other people, and she didn't even know who to ask if they could. So she watched. She watched herds of gazelle and other animals she'd only read about or seen in picture books. While it wasn't home in the least, she thought she could still hunt the things out there as easily as she'd hunted elk at home. If only she could get off the train. It was pointless to wish for it, she knew. The train would stop when it stopped, and she'd get off then. She had only the barest idea of what New York was (she knew it was an American east-coast city, very populated, and famous for several things), but she thought she'd like to explore it when they did arrive. She didn't think she'd be able to hunt there, either, but perhaps someone would know better and be able to direct her somewhere that she could. Hanna glanced briefly to the door when it opened, but it was simply someone passing through. She offered the person a nod before she turned her attention back to the window. They were now passing a small gathering of rhinoceros, and she watched them in rapt fascination. Sometimes she wished the train would go slower, or pause, because it seemed like everything went by too fast. Still, she guessed it had some agenda or another, and a schedule of its own to keep. Resting her hands against the glass, Hanna peered out as the tree-dotted plains continued to sweep by. |
