Finnick had been more or less keeping to himself since he arrived on the train, partially because he hadn't been in any condition to be seen, partially because he hadn't felt like seeing anyone. Especially now that the entire career pack (minus his ill-fated tribute from Four) was onboard. That had never been his thing, even when he had been a Career. He didn't like the idea of working together with a group of people, forming ties with them, only to turn on them like wild dogs in the end. He'd prefer to go it alone from the beginning. That, and he just...wasn't as bloodthirsty as they all seemed to be. Sure, he'd killed his share of people (eight, he believed), but he hadn't gotten the perverse thrill out of it that they seemed to.
And with Annie around...well, the further away from them she was, the better.
He had been thrilled to discover that the train had a pool. There were few better ways he knew of to release tension, few better ways to truly and completely relax. Not only was it great exercise, but it comforted something deep inside of him - even if it wasn't salt-water, and it lacked the wildness and waves of the sea.
Stripping down to a small, Speedo-like bathing suit (he didn't really see why he had to have one at all, but he knew how Katniss and Peeta had reacted to Johanna's random nudity, and figured others might be the same), he dove neatly into the pool, staying underwater nearly the entire length of it. There was something...peaceful about being under water, where no sounds could reach you, where the clatter of the Capitol was effectively silenced. It was as if he were in another world, orbiting another star, somewhere safe where nobody could hurt him. When he surfaced, he cleared his ears and nose, and began swimming laps butterfly style - it helped build upper-body strength, and when your primary fighting skill was throwing a large sharp object hard enough to kill - well, that was something you certainly needed.
