Characters: Captains Tietjens and Harkness
When: Backdated to Wednesday afternoon
Location: R203
Warnings/Rating: Jack flirting, Christopher's PTSD
Summary: Jack comes to hit on help Christopher in his new predicament
Status: Closed/Ongoing

Christopher did as he was bade and remained in his room. He'd managed to pick himself up from the corner of the room he had cowered in on his arrival, and now he paced back and forth, looking out of the window and thinking he probably had completely lost his mind. He knew he had been on the verge when he had been returned to England for those four months, just the stress of not remembering had made him even worse- it was a circular motion of distress and worsening his condition and now, finally, he was here. Perhaps he had been sectioned. Perhaps the gentleman who was coming to visit him would explain where he was and how long they intended to keep him here. Perhaps he wouldn't have to go back to France. Perhaps he already knew the man but his name had been deleted from his memory along with two-thirds of everything else he had known before.

He paced, fiddling with one of the buttons on his army jacket, patting himself down to check the contents of his pockets. The last time they had taken him into hospital they had taken all of his belongings, but he still had his pen and pad, money-

The baby was sleeping, and Jack let him be. The worst that would happen is that he'd cry. Besides, who was going to kidnap a baby on a train? (sidenote: maybe it was a good idea Jack didn't have too much of a hand in raising his kids).

He hurried down the hall to the room where Captain Tietjens was.

"Why hello there," he said after opening the door. "Look what the train brought in!"

Tietjens turned abruptly, blinked and then paused. He had intended to salute, of course, because it was only polite when addressing a man of any rank, but the man that appeared at his door was not dressed as a captain. He didn't look like an army man.

And he was American. Well, Tietjens wasn't in the position to be picky about the help that was offered to him.

"Hello, sir. Christopher Tietjens," he held out his hand to shake, if he wasn't going to salute. "I'm sorry, I haven't been in my prime recently. If we've met before I don't remember."

Of course Jack wasn't dressed as an army man - he hadn't been for years and years, and besides, hello, train! He did have his great coat though, and was glad for that, though there hadn't been much use to wearing it.

"Hey there," Jack said, shaking the man's hand. Haven't met you - I'd have a remembered a face like yours." He winked.

"Now, we'd better sit down, I'm not quite sure how to explain this."

Winked? He had been winked at. Now, Tietjens was not a man of the world, but he had been party to enough people's social interactions to realise that he was being flirted with. That didn't happen to him a lot. Ever. No. No, Tietjens couldn't recount the last time anyone had flirted with him.

He couldn't help but smile.

"That's very polite of you to say, sir. I should say I would have hoped to have remembered you as well." He was certainly a well built man, and if nothing else that was attractive in a very admirable way.

"My bed-" Tietjens pointed to it, indicating that they could sit there.

Jack arched a brow at the suggestion of the bed, but didn't say anything. It was moving a bit fast, but how long had he been on the train? How long ago was his last shag?

Not that he and Cap'n Tietjens over here would, but the opportunity had moved from 'definitely not' to 'possibly'. Jack could work a ways with possibly.

Jack gestured grandly to the bed, "After you, my good sir. Then I'll literally blow your mind with a time-travelling sentient train."

He grinned. He'd done worse before breakfast before.

Tietjens went to his bed, sitting on the edge of it in the military style he had grown so used to in the fretful months at war.

"I hate to remind you that my mind is already suitably blown by warfare, sir," Tietjens replied, looking up at the smiling (and incredibly polite, which he appreciated) man beside him. "It may be impossible to blow any part of me any more, but you are certainly welcome to try."

Oh good lord. He sat so perfectly, so innocently ... so ready ...

Jack shook his head. He couldn't think about that. Not now. Not even with the offers to blow him.

Taking a deep breath to restrain himself, Jack sat gingerly next to the war-torn soldier. "There's no war here," he said gently, placing his hand next to the soldiers, but not touching it. "You've been taken from the war - across all of time and space - to this train. The people and creatures here exist from many realities, many different times. I myself come from 2007." Well, the 51-st century, but he'd work his way into that one. He paused at the end of that statement, giving Tietjens time to absorb it all in. He didn't want to shock the man further.

No war here. The first few words already left him staggering, drawing in a deep, calming breath. He felt the heat of the other man's hand against his own, though there was no physical contact. It made a part of him yearn for that comfort. For the comfort another person could offer that his wife had denied him, and propriety held him back from having. Never, though, had any physical comfort been offered to him by another man.

The explanation was beyond belief and seemed completely illogical. Of course, this whole thing could be a figment of his imagination. His broken, adled brain making too many suggestions.

But Jack seemed real. THat was all that currently kept him from weeping. Jack was warm and vivid and, deciding there was nothing to lose, Tietjens raised a hand to touch the other man's arm, feeling the cloth, the warmth and the muscle beneath his palm.

"You understand, of course, that this is very difficult for me to believe?" he asked, lifting hiseyes to meet Jack's and smiling because, well, it really was either accepting this or crying. "2007 alone is ninety years in my future," yet Jack was his age. Or perhaps even a little older. "And creatures? What manner of creature?" He found himself now more curious than afraid, letting his hand drop back down beside Jack's.

"You seem quite real."

Jack sat perfectly still as the other man grabbed his arm, then his hand. It took great strength not to embrace the man. He would let Tietjens set the pace for the moves.

"I can understand, yes," Jack said softly. "It's a lot to take in. There's people from even later than I am." Including himself. He took a deep breath, unable to help himself and curling his fingers lightly around the other man's. "Creatures that are impossible to believe. Witches, werewolves, and vampires."

He had to let out a small laugh at the last comment, "I am quite real, I assure you. As is everyone else on the train."

Tietjens looked down at their hands with some curiosity. Even last night- last night? he had been desperate for a touch, a kiss, some reassurance. All he had been left with were words and an aching heart.

His gaze returned to Jack's face, so open and friendly and certainly, he was sure, with the best intentions in mind. And he was being so understanding, not throwing a lot of information at him in the careless thought that he would just be able to take it on.

He had to steady himself a little bit, though, as Jack spoke of witches, werewolves, and vampires. His grip tightened slightly on the other man's hand. Well, it wasn't the first, nor would it be the only time, he had held a gentleman's hand in fear or shock.

"Werewolves and vampires," Tietjens sighed, shaking his head. "What am I to make of that? They're not real to me," he laughed. "But they're here. I- I'm really going to have to open my mind. Thank you for your patience," he laughed. For the first time in a very long time, it felt.
