After her impromptu archery session, Katniss returned to her assigned car feeling a lot lighter than she had. It felt good, being able to shoot something. Though, at the same time, she had a feeling she wouldn't be guaranteed of finding that particular car again. Maybe she could try swimming, if she could find or borrow a swimsuit? That might not be a bad idea, actually. In any event, by the time she had finished, her stomach had been growling pretty intensely at her. So, she showered, changed into clean clothes, and decided to strike out for some food. Up until that point, Katniss had been solely surviving on either what she could find that was readily available to eat or what others had made for her. It wasn't that she was an incapable cook--it was that she had no idea how to work the appliances that were in the food preparation cars. She felt foolish asking someone how to show her, too, so she pretended that whatever she had chosen to eat was what she really came to eat in the end. At the moment, though, she was pretty tired of cereal. She also was pretty sure she had the contents of the first kitchen car and the smaller one memorized at this point. Thus, she decided to head back to the rear kitchen car--the one she just realized existed that day. Before she even got to it, a wonderful smell wafted through the air. Katniss had to stop and close her eyes. She inhaled the scent deeply and couldn't help but smile (and looking incredibly goofy doing so). Her stomach growled with renewed vigor, so she kept moving forward. The moment she stepped inside the kitchen car, she had her mouth open to gush about how delicious the food smelled but stopped herself short. Peeta. Her mouth snapped shut. She had half a mind to turn around and walk right back out, but her stomach would have hated her for it. Instead, she made an awkward half-turn to inspect the covers on the opposite wall of the cab, trying to play it off like that had been her intention all along. Well, this wasn't good. |
