Characters: Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood
When: Backdated to Monday night, several hours after this thread
Location: Cabin R-601B
Warnings/Rating: None/Low
Summary: Alec is recovering from his zombie bite! Dun dun dun!
Status: Completed

It’d been several hours now since Jace had shown up at his door with a bloodied and unconscious Alec in his arms and Magnus had not budged from his boyfriend’s bedside, no matter that it was getting late. His magic coupled with the iratzes Jace had already applied had taken care of the wound easily enough, but Alec had lost a lot of blood and his face still far paler than it ought to have been. That however, was not the biggest of Magnus’ concerns. Shadowhunters were ridiculously resilient after all. What was far more worrisome was the fact that Alec had been bitten by one of the zombies and no one on the train was quite sure what that might mean yet.

Magnus continually tried to remind himself that these weren’t your typical Hollywood zombies. That they were dealing with demonic possession as opposed to some sort of virus or curse that could be all too easily transferred. But the uncertainty was still there and it was twisting Magnus’ stomach with dread. What was going to happen when Alec woke up? Would he even still be Alec at all? Would they be able to reverse it somehow? Magnus sighed, letting out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. He wasn’t used to this. Feeling helpless. So desperately worried over someone else. All he could do now was just wait and try not to drive himself crazy in the process..

Sinking down into the desk chair he’d dragged over, Magnus took Alec’s limp hand in his own, absently running his thumb across the back of it soothingly as he silently fretted. He wasn’t sure how long he’d been sitting like that before Alec finally began to stir beside him, snapping him out of his thoughts immediately. Magnus jolted up leaning forward to brush Alec’s dark hair out of his eyes as he started to wake up. “Alexander? Alec, are you...” he trailed off, biting his lip anxiously.

Alec honestly didn’t remember much. The fact that he was waking up in a bed was already surprising him. He remembered chasing the zombie down, the one about to tackle Jace and probably do far more gruesome things than it had managed on Alec. He remembered the pain too, the inability to help himself, the inability to actually speak. At some point Jace had picked him up; he recalled the disorienting feeling of vertigo and stability at once. Then there was darkness. It seemed so far away now as he fluttered into consciousness. If one thing was certain, amidst the oncoming of feeling in his limbs, the soreness from the iratze he was sure someone had drawn on him, it was that he knew that Magnus was near. Alec’s fingers clenched around Magnus’s hand before his eyes even fully opened.

Magnus sounded apprehensive, worried. Something that was not a frequent emotion Alec was privy too. In fact, it was usually the opposite -- Alec worrying about everyone else. It was what got him into this mess in the first place wasn’t it. Even now, as he focused in on his boyfriend who was sitting at his bedside, he wanted to know if Jace was okay. Had he saved him in time? Alec would always be watching his back, he had promised. He wanted to drift back off into sleep at Magnus’s touch to his forehead, and almost did, taking in deep even breaths before attempting to speak. The gesture was not lost on Alec, and he wished to only concentrate on that. He made an small involuntary appreciative sound while Magnus smoothed back his hair.

“Am I what?” Alec asked, his voice was raw and hoarse. It seemed as though he hadn’t used it in quite some time, or ever. It felt the same way too. Alec’s own free hand moved to touch his throat, finding that where a wound should have been, was a still healing scar. His neck was tender, but not nearly as gruesome as it had been hours before. “Is.. everyone okay?” Alec looked to Magnus, concerned. This all meant nothing if he had failed to stop the zombie in the first place.

Magnus’ hand lingered at the soft whimper that had escaped from Alec’s mouth, his fingers trailing down to gently cup the side of his boyfriend’s face as his eyes finally blinked open groggily. Magnus tried not to think about just how stark the contrast was between the color of his hand and the pallor of Alec’s skin was currently, instead finding solace in the familiar blue eyes gazing up at him. He relaxed visibly as soon as Alec spoke. The Shadowhunter’s voice sounded a bit rough, but that was to be expected. Magnus was just relieved that so far everything seemed to be alright.

He shook his head when Alec questioned him, not entirely sure what it was that he had been about to say himself. Was he alright? Was he undead? Did he suddenly have the inexplicable desire to eat brains? Ugh. Of course not! “Nothing, my love. How are you feeling? Are you in pain?” Magnus asked instead, watching Alec carefully as he reached up to feel the spot on his neck where he had been bitten. There was only a fading mark there now, but Magnus could still visualize all too clearly the vicious, gaping wound that had been there when Jace had hauled him inside. Alec’s t-shirt was still stained with blood as if to prove the fact that he’d been grievously injured just hours before. Magnus had been too drained right after healing him to magic it away and then he’d been too afraid to move Alec to take it off.

He couldn’t help but roll his eyes good naturedly when Alec’s first concern was about everyone other than himself. Not that it was at all surprising. Alec possessed a rare innate innocence and goodness about him and it was huge part of what had drawn Magnus to him in the first place. Alec was selfless by nature, even when it was to his detriment. “Those idiots are just fine. You’re the one you should be worried about right now. Although I’m fairly sure Jace has probably paced through the floor of the hallway by now,” he replied with dismissive wave of his hand. “We’ve really got to set a limit on your near death experiences, I think you’ve reached your quota for the foreseeable future,” he continued, feigning nonchalance. It was Magnus’ way of saying ‘you scared me to death, I was so worried about you, please don’t get hurt like that again.’

Magnus’s hand felt warm against his skin on his face, not realizing that he had been cold in the first place. He swallowed, purposefully, making sure that he could still indeed use his throat to all of its natural capacity. It still felt weird and strangely disconcerting that he had felt it gone, only to have it back with the help of an iratze and magic. It was a phantom limb, even if his hand was still resting there, and he could feel his hand on it, his fingers touching it. As Alec closed his eyes for another relieving moment, he didn’t even have the strength to tell Magnus that he didn’t mind that pet name. It was much better than ‘darling’ or ‘sweet pea’ -- but he wouldn’t have corrected him on those either. Not right now.

“I’m... okay.” Alec managed out, trying to bring himself to a more coherent state. He still felt the tug of exhaustion, the weakness of the damage the iratze could not immediately fix, the heaviness of every muscle on his body. But he didn’t want Magnus to worry. But the way the warlock spoke, it seemed that Alec’s injury was just another frustrating side effect of dating a Shadowhunter. He almost commented on it, when Magnus mentioned Jace, and Alec tried -- far too quickly -- to sit up in bed. “Jace is out there? Is he --” Alec regretted the decision to move that fast instantly. His arms that were struggling to lift his body failed him, and buckled under his weight. The room started to spin, and Alec squeezed his eyes shut if only to try and stop the vertigo.

He reached blindly for Magnus again, gripping his arm tightly to steady himself before he dared to open his eyes again. “It wasn’t my fault,” Alec said, trying to explain. He didn’t want Magnus to think he had asked for it. Saving the life of others was paramount in his job as a Shadowhunter, even more so because he was saving his parabatai. Perhaps it seemed that Alec was being far too hyperaware of the safety of others given that Max had recently been not so equally protected -- Alec was trying to make up for it on many levels. “There was one coming right after Jace... I couldn’t.. It was going to..” Alec’s voice died down into a hoarse whisper, feeling the strain from using it too much, too quickly. Leave to him to try and get back on his feet before he was even fully healed.

It came in a flash, the memory of the event as he was described the what and why’s of his ‘near death experience’. There was Jace, the zombie, then it was on top of him, the blood. Alec’s eyes shot open, startled back into reality. He looked at Magnus, took a shuddering breath and then glanced down to his shirt. His fingers ghosted over the material, it was still slightly damp and stiff with his blood

“My shirt..” He remarked, listlessly. He didn’t want any more tangible reminders of what happened today. The rest of his words came in a broken sentence. “I want new .. it.. need off..”

While Magnus had known going into his relationship with Alec that danger and injuries were par for the course for a Shadowhunter, he wasn’t sure he would ever get used to actually seeing it happen, even though this was the second time now. He’d been called on hundreds of times for healing magic in the past but it was different when it concerned someone so dear to him. And while normally he’d have no complaints about having Alec sprawled out in bed before him, it was heartwrenching to see him like this, bloodstained and weak and rather unlike his usual self. It didn’t help matters that Magnus wasn’t entirely convinced by Alec’s wavering response...

When Alec suddenly tried to sit up and climb out of bed, Magnus’s hands immediately flew up to grip his shoulders, at first to stop him and then to steady him as dizziness overcame him. “Ah, ah, ah!” Magnus admonished. “You’re not going anywhere, Alexander. You need to rest,” he said gently, helping to ease Alec back down to the bed again. A brief pang of jealousy swept over Magnus at Alec’s eagerness to go to Jace, his jaw clenching just the slightest bit before he managed to tamp it down again. He of course respected the fact that the two shared a powerful bond as both parabatai and adoptive brothers but he also knew that for a long time Alec had had (and probably still had to some degree) feelings for Jace. Unrequited feelings, but feelings nonetheless. It was a notion that Magnus was still not exactly comfortable with. “Do you want me to go get him?” he asked, secretly and somewhat selfishly hoping he’d get a bit more time with Alec alone before Jace inevitably came in.

When Alec grasped his arm, Magnus laid a comforting hand on top of his. “I never said it was, darling,” he responded when Alec sought to justify his actions. “I blame Jace and Will entirely. Mostly Jace,” he continued matter-of-factly. “Alec?” Magnus’ eyes narrowed in concern and his hand squeezed Alec’s when the younger boy suddenly seemed distressed, tugging at his shirt. Despite his worry, Magnus kept his tone light and reassuring for Alec’s sake. “Ah yes, of course. I meant to take it off earlier but you’re just so adorable when you’re sleeping. That and I wouldn’t want you to feel scandalized by my undressing you whilst you were unconscious,” he bantered on in regards to Alec’s ruined clothes. Well, the first bit wasn’t untrue! “Come here, arms up,” he urged gently, coaxing Alec with both his voice and his hands to slowly sit up just enough to help him out of his bloodied t-shirt.

Once that was done, Magnus wadded up the stained shirt and tossed it over his shoulder where it then vanished into thin air with shimmer. With a snap of his fingers a new, identical shirt appeared instantly, neatly folded on the end of the bed. “That’s better,” Magnus said appreciatively, eyes roaming across a now shirtless Alec and the graceful, swirling lines of the runes and faded scars of old marks that decorated his bare skin.

Under normal circumstances, Alec would have protested Magnus’s tutting about getting up. He needed to know for himself if Jace was okay, and that everyone was safe. Alec constantly put others before himself first and foremost and zombie attack or not was not going to change the way he thought. However, the way Magnus backed down and offered to invite his parabatai in made Alec second guess the idea. There was something about having Jace in this personal space with him and his boyfriend that didn’t settle well. And with this competition that had been going on, Alec didn’t spend much time with Magnus -- even after the sudden, but not horrible, change of their room.

Alec shook his head no, settling back down against the pillow, sitting up but refusing to lay down. He still felt fatigued, but he was more awake now. He was grateful for Magnus’s approach to making him feel at ease. Although the warlock was much better about showing an air of indifference than Alec was and Alec was unsure of what to make of it. Was it not a big deal or was there actually something that had unnerved Magnus that he dare not let it show? Alec was observant but not omniscient. The confusion in his eyes was apparent, even as he followed Magnus’s suggestion to remove his shirt. He didn’t realize how uncomfortable he had been in it until it disappeared. He also didn’t realize how uncomfortable he felt without it on, exposed and self conscious -- especially in front of Magnus.

He gripped the edge of the sheets, his shoulders hunching forward, head turning to the side, to hide himself. Where Jace was confident about his body and his marks, Alec was less than that. His insecurity was rapidly increasing, as Magnus disposed of and procured a new shirt. What took less than seconds felt like long agonizing minutes. Alec reached for the shirt immediately, clutching it to his chest like a protective blanket. Sure, Magnus had seen him this way before, but Alec had been unconscious and unable to feel any embarrassment in the moment, but now that Magnus was looking at him, his arms, his chest, his battle scars and marks of old runes, Alec felt the blush rise to his cheeks. Other than Magnus’s touch, this was the first time Alec was warm.

Hesitantly, Alec lifted his gaze a bit, still unable to meet Magnus’s eyes. “What? What is is?” Alec asked, afraid of the answer.

Now that Alec looked a bit more coherent, Magnus relaxed back into his chair next to the bed. They weren’t out of the clear for sure, but so far at least Alec seemed like he was going to be alright and that put Magnus’ mind more at ease. His brows did furrow a bit however when Alec immediately dove for the clean shirt, looking completely and utterly uncomfortable with being half-naked in front of him.

They’d only begun dating about a month or so before arriving on the train and even then much of that time had been preoccupied with the invasion of Idris and the Mortal War and other such life and death catastrophes. Needless to say, they had not gotten the chance to spend much time alone together yet. Magnus knew that Alec was not only normally shy but still coming to terms with being open about his sexuality. He couldn’t understand however why the Shadowhunter could possibly be ashamed of his body. He was breathtaking in Magnus’ opinion and the scars and marks only added to the effect.

“You not being covered in your own blood?” Magnus responded, arching an eyebrow over at his boyfriend. He was a little unsure of what exactly had Alec so on edge. They were together now! Surely there was no need for them to be insecure around one another. Of course, Magnus had had nearly eight centuries to become comfortable in his own skin. He had to remind himself at times that Alec was just getting started. He couldn’t deny however that the blush creeping over Alec’s face was incredibly endearing. “What’s wrong?” he asked, reaching over to place his fingers under Alec’s chin, gently tipping his face up so that he could meet his eyes again. Sometimes getting the introverted Alec to open up about how he was feeling could be a little like pulling teeth.

Maybe if Alec wasn’t recovering from an almost life threatening injury he would be less prone to hide himself away from his boyfriend. But mixed with his own insecurities and the fact that he had barely been able to lift himself up a moment ago, he felt unattractive to Magnus. This frail Shadowhunter, human and mortal to someone so powerful as a warlock? It had become a sore subject that Magnus would outlive him and seen so much before him, that it drove Alec crazy sometimes. Surely there had been more competent and confident lovers of Magnus Bane, and Alec often thought that his own feelings to Magnus were a blip in the long future that awaited his boyfriend. He couldn’t turn away from Magnus with his hand under his chin, nor did he want to, but that uncomfortable feeling about not being good enough let to him clutching to the shirt harder.

Alec realized that he had misinterpreted Magnus’s staring, nothing that he had just been covered in his own blood only moments before, and for hours at the time. Alec was sure he would not be able to wash the memory out of his head either, and his gaze softened apologetically to Magnus. “I’m.. I’m sorry. I didn’t even think that it would.. with the injury.. that..” Alec trailed off, flustered and embarrassed that he thought otherwise. He took a deep breath, to calm himself. He was not supposed to be like this in front of Magnus! Besides, he knew that wherever Izzy was, she was certainly disapprove of his lack of ‘go-getter-ness’. She had always been the one to tell him to work his best features. But Alec never felt comfortable asking Isabelle for relationship advice, the conversations usually ended with Alec turning the shade of red he was now.

“It’s..” Alec said, realizing that all coherent thought of words left his mind when he finally was able to look at his boyfriend. His. When he wasn’t coddling him with pet names and insisting on him wearing bright colors, all the reasons Alec was attracted to him came into bloom. He found a new surge of confidence in his voice again, despite his earlier failure of words. “We’ve never been like this before, I’ve never been like this before in front of you. I thought that maybe you.. might not like it.” Alec admitted, that feeling of not being good enough for Magnus Bane showing.

Alec paused, as if considering something, before he reached up, pulling Magnus’s lips down on his. It was hard and a little unpracticed, but Alec had wanted to. If there was one thing that Alec did not lack was his ability to be straightforward even if he was somewhat confined to a bed. That and Magnus never complained when he took the first step.

“Yes, we have,” Magnus pointed out coyly, referring of course to the first time he had healed Alec after a certain encounter with the demon had left him in even worse shape. “And you don’t ever need to worry about that. You’re stunning, Alec. Very much so,” he added sincerely.

It was naturally true that Magnus was by far the more experienced of the two. He had been with all manner of different people, male and female, both mortal and immortal alike. It wasn’t that he was especially promiscuous or moved through relationships quickly, but simply a result of having been alive for so long. He’d gone through his phases for sure, but Alec was most definitely not just another notch in his bedpost to be forgotten later. Magnus was committed. There was something special about him, even if Alec himself couldn’t see it.

It was also true that Magnus enjoyed whenever Alec took the initiative and while he made a muffled, surprised sound when his boyfriend suddenly pulled his head down to press their lips together he certainly did not protest. Snaking his arms around Alec’s neck, Magnus slid forward to sit on the edge of his chair, bringing them closer together as he deepened the kiss. They stayed like that for several moments before Magnus spoke softly against Alec’s lips. “You’re...still recovering...” he said a little breathlessly between kisses. “You need to lie down..” Reluctantly, Magnus pulled back slowly, one hand trailing down Alec’s bare neck, tracing the outline of his jaw lightly. “Scoot over, I’ll join,” he said, flashing Alec a crooked smile.

Alec knew the exact time he was talking about, seeing him this way before. Why did it seem that the only time Alec could be forward in their relationship when it came to physical intimacy was when he was almost killed? It didn’t seem quite fair. At least this time, he was conscious for it. It was a step in the right direction. Naturally though, Alec shied away from Magnus, floored by his comment. Magnus was the stunning one, but Alec found the words to tell him that catching in throat. There was something about the way Magnus conducted himself that was attractive. His confidence, this air of nonchalance -- that nothing could phase him, a sense of fearlessness that Alec admired. Needless to say, the usually insecure Alec found a pleasure in catching him off guard.

Alec had a brief flash of disappointment when Magnus pulled away, explaining that he was still recovering, and that he needed rest. Of course, he knew all these things, felt them tugging at him at every moment, telling him he should not be exerting himself. But Alec didn’t want to. He thought for once he was on level ground with Magnus, keeping up, being spontaneous, being enough for Magnus Bane. Alec felt his own heart racing in his chest, believing that Magnus could probably hear it, and he desperately wished he could keep himself calm. Why was he always the one to be easily flustered or obviously affected by Magnus’s touch. His eyes slid closed as Magnus touched his neck, only to snap back open when Magnus suggested he scoot over, to let him in.

With an uncomfortable, awkwardly quick motion, Alec slid over to one side of the bed, finding that while it was clearly suited for two people, it was a snug fit. There wasn’t far for him to go, just enough to let Magnus fit in next to him. Alec’s head felt heavy as he rested back down on the pillow, not realizing how right Magnus had been about him needing rest. He exhaled slowly, his fingers reaching across to gently graze Magnus’s side, just under his shirt. The touch was tentative in its nature, only because Alec wondered how much reinforcement Magnus would go to about his insistence on Alec’s recovery, and he was afraid Magnus would tell him to hold off on anything else for tonight.

“Thank you,” he finally said, his voice quieT by choice not because of his healing injury. “I didn’t thank you before.”

Magnus was unable to contain a slightly amused smile when Alec’s eyes widened almost comically at his suggestion. The Shadowhunter was so easy to make fluster and make blush and Magnus loved that he was the one lucky enough to be the cause of it. He waited until Alec shuffled over in the bed before easily slipping under the covers beside him, still clad in stylish black jeans that hung low on his hips and a thin, v-necked shirt. The bed was comfortably warm from where Alec had been lying and Magnus rolled over onto his side so that they were facing one another and propped his head up with his hand.

“You look better already,” he remarked softly, eyes wandering over the scar that was still healing over on Alec’s throat and the color that was now in his cheeks. Alec’s soft touch across the bare skin just above his hip sent a pleasant shiver up Magnus’s spine and his eyes fluttered closed for a moment. If Alec was going to be doing things like that then Magnus was certainly not going to stop him. A least not now that he’d convinced Alec to lie back down. Canoodling in bed could still be considered a form of resting in Magnus’s book, he decided.

While Magnus may have been the more confident and assertive of the pair, he liked when Alec took the lead when it came to this sort of thing. Both because it kept him on his toes (which was no easy feat when one had been around as long as he had) and because he didn’t want to unintentionally push the still somewhat naive Alec into anything that might make him uncomfortable.”No thanks necessary, as my significant other you’re allowed freebies,” he said matter-of-factly when Alec spoke up again. Reaching over, Magnus carefully brushed Alec’s dark hair back again before cupping his face to bring him in for another soft kiss.

“I wasn’t about to lose you,” he murmured when their lips parted again.

“I do?” Alec asked, unsure. He wondered if Magnus was saying it as a cheeky comment about this looks again or if it was an sincere observation. His own hand drifted back to touch his neck gently; his fingers reached to touch his cheeks, knowing that those would be the most tell tale signs of his recovery. Alec still felt weaker than normal, but he could only imagine what the worse had seemed like. He felt his thoughts drift away for a moment, the taste of blood in his mouth and the pain from the injury. He would have to apologize to the others eventually, when he was able to stand without feeling lightheaded.

Alec couldn’t keep the smile off his face when Magnus told him no thanks necessary. He would hope he didn’t have to pay to be saved by his boyfriend, but he still felt the need to be appreciative. It was easy sometimes to fall into the Shadowhunter etiquette when dealing with others, often forgetting that he was much more intimate with Magnus than anyone else. He knew that Magnus dealt with a lot of the issues that Alec’s family couldn’t immediately resolve, or certain others aboard the train couldn’t, but he wondered if of them had realized that Alec might have been the reason Magnus wasn’t banging down their doors asking for payment.

Alec’s breath hitched in his throat feeling Magnus touch his face, drawing him into a kiss. Ever since the first time they kissed, when Magnus had made a determined every to show him a proper way to kiss, Alec knew he never wanted anyone else’s lips after that. Magnus’s touch made his whole body feel on fire, the blood rush to his face, this small rush of excitement every time. This was no exception. The tenderness of his touch only led to surprise Alec more at the statement that followed after they broke apart. While Alec certainly felt the same way, their reasons for losing the other were much different -- and in that, was where the differences in their livelihoods became apparent.

“I am much more resilient than mundanes,”Alec said. It wasn’t to brag or to provide comfort. Merely a reminder of what he was; a shadowhunter, first and foremost. He was built for combat and putting his life on the line. He felt a rise though in the thought of loss: Magnus would eventually lose him. If not to battle then to mortality. It was a sore subject that usually ended in a disagreement. Alec was in no mood or in any state to argue.

“As long as you are around, I have nothing to fear,” Alec said, but it was almost poised as a question to Magnus: would Magnus always be around? Because that was all Alec wanted. Alec’s intense gaze to Magnus as he spoke didn’t last long. He couldn’t take the thought of it becoming awkward or uncomfortable, and tilted his head down, away from Magnus’s face, pressing his cheek to his chest instead. Magnus was warm, and there was something humanizing about listening to his heartbeat -- Alec could pretend there against the rhythmic thumping that Magnus wasn’t an immortal.

“You do,” Magnus nodded. Alec certainly wasn’t completely back to himself just yet, but he was not only no longer on death’s doorstep but smiling over at him and that was the important thing. Even if the act of kissing itself was not new for Magnus by any means, kissing Alec still was. It was exciting for the warlock too and he couldn’t deny that he felt a certain spark every time Alec touched him. He didn’t even mind the occasional clumsiness or moments awkwardness that came with an inexperienced partner. It was part of the fun of getting to know one another, he thought to himself, humming in approval when Alec returned his kiss.

“That still doesn’t mean I enjoy seeing you injured,” he pointed out when Alec reminded him of his being Nephilim and the enhanced fortitude that came along with it. While he knew that Alec was more than capable of taking care of himself and holding his own in battle, the fact that Magnus had now seen him fatally injured twice in such a short amount of time was not doing much to ease his worry.

At Alec’s next statement it was Magnus’s turn to be a bit caught off guard, the brief shift in his boyfriend’s expression concerning him. He couldn’t blame Alec for needing some reassurance. Not only had he just been through a traumatic ordeal but he’d also recently lost his brother. “I will always be here to put you back together again, my love,” Magnus responded, pressing a kiss to Alec’s forehead before letting his head rest back against the pillows.

When Alec lay his head against his chest, Magnus wrapped his arm around him, holding him close, fingers tracing idle patterns along Alec’s shoulder with feather light touches. For the first time since Alec had been carried into the room that afternoon, Magnus felt himself relax.
