Neville had heard through the grapevine that Harry, Ron and Hermione had gone out among the zombies. It didn't surprise him at all; he was well aware that they had a devil-may-care courage that often ended them up in perilous circumstances. It was, well, kind of their thing. It also didn't surprise him at all that they hadn't invited him. They had all been friends, sure, they had all been in the same house...but he also knew that they considered him far more of a hindrance than a help, except in those few circumstances where fate...or luck...or whatever had intervened and given him a burst of bravery that he didn't know he had. Still, he couldn't help feeling a little left out, as he had so many times at Hogwarts. Yeah, he didn't want to get in the way. He didn't want to get anyone hurt. He'd never be able to forgive himself if he did something daft and one of his friends suffered. He probably would have said no, even. If he'd, you know, been invited. But he hadn't been.
He shook his head, refusing to dwell on it. Thinking like that wasn't going to do any good, it wasn't going to make him feel any better, and he certainly didn't want them to hear about him whining, and inviting him next time because they felt guilty. Merlin, no.
He'd just go out himself. He was tired of being stuck on the train, and although he wasn't brave in the same way that they were, he wasn't a coward, either. So he grabbed his wand, and within a few moments found himself in the rather unpleasant air of Nashville.
Looking around him, he took a few steps forward, where it seemed to be safe. He could hear screams in the distance, whoops of victory or triumph as someone else slayed one of the creatures, so he knew he couldn't be too far away. He was overcome by a sudden desire to get back onto the train, but he fought it down, and forced himself to go even further into the apocalyptic landscape. He kind of hoped he'd meet up with someone out here, because coming out here suddenly didn't seem like as good of an idea as it had at first.
