Summary: Couples angst about possible loss-by-zombie
Status: Complete/G'docs'd
Juliet pulled the sneakers onto her feet slowly, smoothing her hands down her thighs before she stood up. She wasn’t going to lie; she was terrified out of her mind. But she could find things, and if they were going to fend off the zombies for however long they needed to to get supplies and things, they were going to need more weapons -- more effective weapons -- than they currently had. Which meant they needed her assistance. She knew she’d be well-guarded, but she also knew she’d be the odd number in the group. The other two were couples, and if push came to shove, Juliet knew they’d protect each other first. If Alex had any sort of power, or mutation, or some sort of skill with weapons, she would have pushed for him to be invited along so she’d at least know for sure someone had her back. But he didn’t. He and Simon were staying on board to help with any sort of patching up that needed to happen, when the inevitable accidents occurred. “So … I should … go,” she said finally. They hadn’t exactly planned a time to meet -- ‘after breakfast’ could really be any time -- but she thought the sooner they got going, the sooner she’d get back. “I’ll try to come back in one piece,” she tried to joke, but it fell a little flat. _____________________ To put it lightly, Alex was not a fan of this. A very large part of him wanted to go anyway. He could fire a weapon even if he had no training. Yet the logical part of him knew it was likely he would just be in the way, if things went badly. Yes, there was a chance instinct would kick in and he’d heroically save the day -- or her -- in some way, but there was probably a bigger chance that his lack of powers and weapon skills would just get him or someone else killed. It was just a huge blow to accept that it was better sending Juliet out in the hands of near strangers than going with her. Really, he wished she didn’t have to go at all. “I’ll fix you up, if you don’t,” he tried to joke back, managing a smile that wasn’t very convincing. He pushed up to his feet from the edge of the bed. “At least you’ll be in good hands,” he murmured, hoping to convince the both of them. She was heading out there with three wizards and a … cop, more or less, so... there was that. Though it still didn’t make him like it anymore. _____________________ She nodded. “It’s not the same,” she admitted. Sure, it was better than one guy with a gun, but there hadn’t been zombies in Nebraska. “I mean, not the same as … going out with a team I know, like at home.” She thought she would have given … well, a lot, to have some of the others from home here. Especially their pyrokinetic. But she didn’t. She had some very talented witches, a wizard, and a guy with a gun. “I’ll … I can try to keep you posted, if you want. Send you pictures of the … scenery.” She shifted her weight before she glanced up to him. They didn’t know what was out there, not really, and while she trusted them to look out for her, she knew shit happened. Fidgeting a little, she looked away before she exhaled softly. “So …” She hesitated, because saying ‘I love you’ now just seemed … well, like she was only saying it because of the situation. But it was true, so did it matter when she said it, or what prompted the saying of it? If she never had a chance after this, shouldn’t he know? “Well. I … if I don’t … make it back, or am completely incoherent when I do get back … I love you, and … I just … wanted you to know that.” _____________________ “I know. I wish I was going out there with you,” he murmured, but what he really meant was that he wished he had some power that would make him useful enough to go along. Or that she didn’t have a power that was entirely too useful. At the least, he wished he knew the wizards better. He didn’t not trust them, and he did think she was in good hands, he just … he just didn’t like this. “Maybe let me know when you guys are on your way back.” He figured they might just … teleport -- or whatever it was wizards did -- back, but it would still be nice to have an idea when to expect her. He thought if she sent him messages otherwise and then she stopped sending them, he would worry even more, even if the reason wasn’t because she’d been attacked by a zombie. “Hey,” he said softly, moving towards her to wrap his arms around her. He knew she wasn’t saying it just because of the situation -- well, he knew she meant it, even though the situation was moving her to say it sooner than she might have otherwise. “I love you too,” he murmured softly. “You better make it back so we can say it again under less dire circumstances.” _____________________ “But then I’d worry about you getting hurt,” she pointed out, her brows elevating. Juliet sighed softly before she shook her head. Well, it was what it was. She had a gift, and it seemed pointless to waste it when it could be useful to everyone on the train. She might save lives, and she knew they’d look out for her. She just didn’t have the same level of comfort with them that she had with her team at home. Juliet nodded to his statement. “If I can. I mean, if we … pop back because of an emergency, I’d just … be here,” she said. Though she hoped it didn’t come to that. “I’ll … use my judgement.” She laughed faintly, shakily, to his response. She was glad he’d said it back, and she didn’t doubt that he meant it. Wrapping her arms around him, she held him for a moment longer, resting her head against his chest. “I’ll come back,” she promised him before she tilted her chin up to steal a soft kiss. Drawing away, she smiled at him before she started toward the door; if she didn’t make it out now, she wouldn’t ever leave. _____________________ Alex was a little relieved that she hadn’t questioned his response. He knew it might have seemed like he was just saying it back because of the situation, but that wasn’t the case and he wasn’t the sort to throw those words around if he didn’t mean them. His arms wrapped around her and he held her and returned the kiss before she started to draw away. Reluctantly, he released her and managed a smile in return. She would come back and then they could laugh about how worried they’d both been. Exhaling, he shoved his hands into his pockets and tried to think of things he could do that would keep him from going crazy while she was gone. Jaime and Lily had spent the night prior discussing strategies for this particular venture. First they thought they were just dealing with zombies … and then it turned out they were actually demon zombies. Which made sense -- when did the train ever do anything half-assed? They’d recruited Juliet to their cause, and Jaime was fine with 99.9% of the plan. The only part she wasn’t completely comfortable with was Ray’s involvement. Lily, Severus, and herself were magically inclined, and could set zombies on fire. Ray had a gun, sure, and ammo -- but it was Ray and if anything happened to him … well, she knew what it would do to her. Nothing good would come of it. After dressing in a pair of jeans and a pair of boots liberated from the baggage car, Jaime pulled a shirt on over her head. She slipped her primary spare into her pocket, and she shifted her pale blue eyes to Ray. “So, I guess if I ask you real nice to stay behind, that’s still not going to happen?” She hadn’t really broached the topic last night -- she’d been exhausted after discussing it, and worrying about it -- but she at least had to make a play at it. _____________________ While he wouldn’t say he was excited to go fight zombies, it was at least something he could do. Perhaps not quite as effectively as wizards, but he felt confident enough to throw himself into it. If he would have been more of a liability than an asset, he would have reluctantly agreed to stay on the train. But as it was … he glanced over to her at the question, a light smile tracing the edges of his lips. “Only if you stay behind with me,” he arched a brow lightly. He wasn’t exactly surprised by the question -- and he understood it. Honestly, even with all her magical defenses, he still didn’t like the idea of her putting herself in harm’s way. Logically he knew she was in a better position to defend herself than he was, but he felt … better … going with her. If she went out there and got hurt or worse, and he’d been on the train twiddling his thumbs … what if there had been something he could have done to stop it? “I will promise that if I get maimed by a zombie, you can make me stay on the train for all future dangerous outings, though,” he offered, hoping that wouldn’t come back to bite him in the ass. Stepping over to her, he placed his hands on her hips before sliding his arms around her to pull her into a hug. _____________________ “Yeah, I figured you were going to throw something like that at me,” Jaime admitted. She shrugged her shoulders slightly before she sighed. “If you get maimed by a zombie, you’ll be too busy begging my forgiveness to have time to think about staying behind at other stops.” Jaime shifted her eyes away as she thought that statement over, fairly certain it hadn’t come out right. But no matter; the point was there -- he was in trouble if he got hurt. Pressing herself against him, she rested her head on his shoulder as he hugged her. “I love you,” she murmured as she wrapped her arms around him to hold him close. “And since you insist on going out, at least promise you’ll try to be careful?” She drew her head back enough to look up at him. “I can’t lose you, Ray,” she said quietly. “The train couldn’t handle it,” she added, a ghost of a smile on her lips. The truth ran deeper than that, and she trusted he knew that. _____________________ Ray was pretty sure he got the point. He had no doubt at all that if he got hurt, not only would he be in pain from whatever the zombie did to him, but he would be in trouble with Jaime for making her worry about his safety. He did understand, but … he wanted to go. Maybe it was selfish, but he’d be a wreck if he stayed. “I love you too, Jaime,” he murmured back to her as he held her tight against his body. “I will be careful.” He liked to think he knew his limits and the last thing he wanted to do was put the group in danger by doing something stupid. He knew he wasn’t as well equipped as the wizard and witches, but he could at least be back-up, stick by Juliet, be an extra set of eyes. “I know. For the sake of the train, I’ll be extra careful,” he assured her, hearing the words she wasn’t saying. He pressed a kiss to her hair, not in a hurry to let her go. He was just as worried about her own safety, but he knew there was no talking her out of it either, and they needed the supplies. Surely three wizards, a timekeeper, and a mutant could handle a few demon-zombies. _____________________ Jaime would have been content to stay in his arms indefinitely, but then Lily was rapping on the door between their rooms. Drawing back from Ray, she smiled up at him. “Guess it’s go time,” she said quietly as she moved away from him to cross through the door between the suites. Her eyes flicked over the others there, and she offered a nod to Juliet. She was sure Lily had covered all the thank yous and reassurances and whatever, and Jaime would be content to just go. “So, we’re all set?” She asked. While they hadn’t exactly sat down and decided who would play leader, Jaime assumed the role was falling to her. She was on point (citing experience and personality -- Snape had her bested in experience, but she couldn’t imagine he’d want point), and she figured the others would just fall in around Juliet once they got moving. She did flick her eyes to Lily. “If we have to pop out fast …” “I’ll get her,” Lily replied with a somewhat sheepish glance to Juliet. She really did hate talking about people in front of them. But she knew Jaime would have Ray -- as if there was ever a question about that -- and Snape would have their backs, so that left her to apparate Juliet if they got trapped. “All right,” Jaime said. “Let’s go torch some fucking zombies.” |
