Jake thought if he heard the implication that he was 'just a kid' one more time ... well, he'd smile and take it because short of shooting a hole in someone or regaling them with stories he'd rather not remember, there was no way to prove he was more than just barely twelve years old. Jaime knew better, and he took some comfort in that, but most everyone else acted like he was a normal twelve year old. Just now, he wasn't sure what was normal for a twelve year old. He thought a normal pre-teen in this sort of situation would probably be shaking in their boots or hiding under their bed. He was more interested in finding out who was doing this and putting a stop to it, but no one was letting him in on anything. He was hearing things second and third hand from Jaime, but even she didn't know much. Mostly because no one else knew much. Breaking off a piece of the bacon he was eating, he tossed it down to Oy who promptly snapped it out of the air. The bumbler crunched the bacon happily before he barked in a low voice. Jake knew what he was barking at, because he'd been barking at the shadows every time he saw one. Oy had tried chasing them earlier, and when he'd nearly caught up with one it had dissolved into so much smoke. "They can't hurt you," he said to the bumbler, not completely sure he believed that. Whatever they were, they were getting stronger, and bolder. Maybe they'd started out as just shadows, but Jake didn't think they'd end that way. All he hoped was that it ended with the shadows being destroyed somehow. He had tried using a flashlight to chase them away, but they hadn't seemed at all put off by direct light. "Urt," Oy echoed before he turned his gold-ringed eyes back up to Jake. "Ake," he added. "They won't hurt me either," he assured Oy, tossing him another piece of bacon. Jake watched the shadow for a moment longer before he shook his head and turned his attention back to his breakfast. He wasn't sure what he planned to do today, but he wanted to impress on someone that he could help, and that he wasn't just a kid. |
