Harley had taken to spending a lot of time on this car; especially at night. It felt less like she was trapped- as big and glorious as the train had felt when she first arrived, it seemed to be getting smaller, harder to breathe, with each week that passed by with no sign of stopping.
She was homesick. She missed her friends; she missed the way the city smelled at night, the faint tang of smoke, smog, and promises. She missed her babies, Bud and Lou. She missed the way people kept trying to kill her. She even, unbelievably, missed her old cell at Arkham. Just a little; at least there when she looked out the barred window at the night sky, she knew if she turned around Red would be there, with only the width of the corridor and two panes of bullet-proof glass separating them.
One of the few perks was the stars. Harley had first started watching them in Antarctica, or wherever the Ice Place had been. She'd grown up in Brooklyn, and then moved on to Gotham; a sky pure black and full of stars wasn't something she got the chance to see very often. No matter how long she sat out here, stretched out on a bench or a blanket, staring up at them, they never got old.
The night was too warm to bother with a sweater, especially compared to Whoville had been a couple of weeks ago. Harley lounged against the railing in a t-shirt and her denim cutoffs, head back to stare up at the sky, wind ruffling the ends of her pigtails. At this rate she might never wear shoes again.
