Things had been rather touch and go for James over the last several days since the drug that he depended upon had essentially run out. The times where he was feeling well enough to get of bed or hold a conversation at length or do much of anything at all were becoming shorter and farther between. Which meant that had he resolved to make the most of them when they did occur. It had been nearly a week since he’d so much as touched his newly (and rather mysteriously) arrived violin and that needed rectifying he decided. Feeling a bit stronger than he had been recently, Jem took advantage of the fact by hauling himself up out of bed to retrieve the violin case from where it had been resting atop the dresser. Flipping the case open his fingers brushed the polished wood of the instrument lovingly before he pulled it out and brought it up to his shoulder, taking out and tightening the bow next. He was without any of his sheet music of course, but there was still plenty that he could play from memory. Setting the bow to the strings, he quickly played a few simple scales with well practiced ease, trying to warm up fingers that felt stiff and slow. The violin was still in tune from the last time he had played. It was part of why he loved the Guarneri that had once belonged with his father so much. It was not only beautiful but incredibly well-made. Letting his silvery eyes drift closed he drew the bow across the strings again and started to play, slowly at first but picking up speed as went. He still couldn’t shake the tinge of numbness that clung to his hands and arms thanks to the morphine but he forced himself to ignore it, letting the music block it out as muscle memory took over. It had always been his favorite distraction, after all. He hadn’t even realized that Will must have unintentionally left the door to their cabin slightly ajar when he’d gone out earlier and that the music was drifting out into the hall. |
