Who: Jack and Lirael
What: two people with absolutely nothing in common are now roommates. What could go wrong?
Where: Their room
When: Sunday evening
Ratings: none, I'll update if this changes
Status: Closed, ongoing.

Jack was impressed with his room; it had bunk beds! Nothing could go wrong with a room that had bunk beds, especially a room on a random train that had enough sense to put his name on the door. He could tell someone else lived in the room, and he didn't want to just claim a bunk, so he settled on the couch with his devices. His watch appeared not to be working, but everything else had survived intact - including the Doctor's hand. He was perusing the Network, not saying anything at all, checking for names of people he knew.

He was interrupted from his perusing by the door opening.

"Why hello there," he said, with a huge grin on his face. "You must be Lirael. Unless it's common practice here to just barge into rooms, in which case ..." He waggled his eyebrows at her.

Lirael couldn't wait to get back to her room and finish her book. She had stayed in her room all day reading a history from she had never heard of, but had finally been pulled aside by the realization that she hadn't eaten at all. A quick sandwich later, and she was ready to see which side had won the bloody civil war.

She opened the door, and paused in shock. There was a man in her room, sitting on her couch. And was that a hand in a jar on the floor next to him? Yes, she thought it was indeed. More importantly, why was there a hand in a jar on the floor next to him. Her golden hand clenched in sympathy. She had lost her hand, but thankfully no one had decided to pickle it.

And who was 'him' anyway? Wait, he had called her by name. She pulled the door slightly shut, so that she could see the name tag on the door. Jack Harkness.

"Let me guess," she finally said. "New roommate?" He was handsome enough, if one liked tall, dark, and confident. She wasn't sure she did. It was always the handsome ones that seemed to think all they had to do was smile, and she would fall for their charms. And he had a huge smile on his face.

"Yes, I'm Lirael. And you must be Jack." She sighed, and pushed the hair away from her face, the brush of her fingers setting her Charter Mark aglow. At least she had picked up after herself. It was second nature from all the years living in the Hall of Youth, but it would have been very embarrassing for him to have shown up while her personals were strewn around the room. "Welcome to the Orient Express."

"Very much new roommate," Jack chuckled. She was pretty, though there was something a bit off about her. Almost alien - strange how his years in captivity at Torchwood had taught him to think like an earthling, and not think like them all at the same time. He was alien too, but he still wasn't entirely sure when or where he was. Clearly not Earth. Or, not Earth 2007.

"Where you from, Lirael?" Jack said, leaning back on the couch. "And top or bottom?" He winked.

"I am from Belisaere in the Old Kingdom," Lirael said, moving into the room and shutting the door. "It's across the Wall from Ancelstierre. It seems to be a different world than most here are used to. Where do you hale from?"

Was he...flirting with her? No, surely not. He must just be one of those friendly people. "I've been sleeping on the bottom bunk," Lirael said, "but I'm willing to switch if you're particular." If they were going to be roommates, she might as well be friendly back, but what she really felt like doing was throwing a tantrum. She hated sharing a room with anyone, much less a strange male. Her stomach gave a lurch. What would Nick think? Not that she would ever get to see Nick again...

"Boeshane," Jack said, looking curiously at her. "What star system are you from? Or you from different Universe Earth?"

He winked at her again, "Oh, I don't mind top at all." She didn't seem like she minded the flirting the first time, so he kept it up. Hey, he couldn't help it people were flattered by him.

Jack leaned back on the couch, fully relaxed. "So. How long you been here, and what does one do for entertainment?"

Lirael gave a shrug. "I'm afraid I don't know how to answer that," she admitted. "Until I got pulled here, I hadn't even heard of 'star systems' or 'different Universes'. My world lacked any form of technology that would create such questions. Do I understand that you're people are star-travelers?"

"That makes things easy, then," she replied. Why did he keep winking? Did he have something in his eye? "I'm a pretty restless sleeper, so there's a larger than average chance that I would actually roll off the bed. When I was young, I could destroy half my room and wake up sleeping under the desk, and not even know how I got there. I've gotten better about it over the years, but there's always a chance for bad night."

"Let me see," Lirael said. "I arrived..." she ticked the weeks off on her golden hand, "...almost three months ago. I'm afraid there's not a whole lot to do while the train is moving. There's a car that has these screens that allow you to watch things called movies, which are like a play but without the people in front of you. And you can also play something called 'video games', but I don't really understand any of those, other than it requires a lot of yelling."

She moved over to her bunk and sat down on the edge. "We have a library car. I spend a lot of time there. And there's a couple of kitchens, if you like to cook. And then the last car is different. It can become whatever you want it to be, and hold anything. I spend a lot of time sparring in there." She gave another shrug. "And then it seems some people need more social interaction than I do, so there's a number of people who get together to talk. They are often in the dining car." She suppressed a shudder. She was never comfortable around people, so even the idea of voluntarily getting in the middle of that loud group was almost unbearable.

"Not all of my people are star-travellers," Jack said with a grin. "Some of them are life-long Boeshaners. I signed up for the Time Agency, going back and forth in space and time and running missions. And the like."

Lirael was very straightforward, and he knew he'd be wasting his time flirting with her anymore. "Movie car, video game car, library car, and a room that can become anything you want it to be? And no way to get off?"

Why was the first question that came to his mind, but he figured she wouldn't know why. There had to be a grander purpose for them, but he couldn't figure out what attempting to placate them would do.

"Well. I'll try to keep my side of the room clean," he said, for the first time sounding serious. He thought she'd appreciate the gesture.
