Characters: John Watson and Sherlock Holmes
When: Saturday evening
Location: Their room (F 502)
Warnings/Rating: Potentially high
Summary: John's birthday! Sherlock has some surprises up his stylish sleeves.
Status: Closed/Ongoing
One of the main benefits of basically being a doctor of chemistry was that there was very little that Sherlock Holmes could not achieve with the random and otherwise useless things provided by the train. If Sherlock wanted something, by God he would boil and extract and fiddle until he had it.
He had needed to break some zinc down in order to create zinc sulphide, but that was a lot easier said than done on the train with the very little chemistry equipment he had on hand and the fact that he couldn't heat anything beyond waters boiling point. The whole process was a lot more time consuming than he had been prepared for and really, his base was very unstable, but that was half of the fun. Except when it came to playing with oxygen and flames. Sherlock was lucky he was still alive at the end of day one of his 'preparations for John's birthday.'
Of course John knew nothing about this. If he did he would probably have been quite angry.
Following his unfortunately half-arsed zinc extraction Sherlock was then in need of some copper which wasn't exactly readily available, though he didn't have a lot of qualms yanking bits off of the train at random. Really, what was the worst that could happen? He was left with a relatively unable base and an inadequate activating material, the whole thing had disaster written all over it, but Sherlock was ever the optimist, especially when his skills were involved.
The whole experiment had to wait until John was suitably distracted elsewhere before it was put together. This was Sherlock's crowning moment! Except there was still the possibility it would go balls up and he'd be left with a possibly corrosive and dangerous liquid. It had probably also not been a good idea to use clear nail varnish as his medium considering the components of that, but hey-ho. Nothing terrible had ever happened when Sherlock had done science-
There was certainly glee in his heart when, alone in their room, Sherlock put together his mixture of diluted nail varnish and bastardised version of zinc sulphide, adding the copper activator and watching his solution glow softly. It'd be better when the lights were off. But that was for later.
He knew he could have taken John outside, that in theory that would have been a lot better, but this would at least last them a while and they had the privacy of their room in which to enjoy it. Plus, it meant that Sherlock got to demonstrate his now incredibly advanced knowledge of the universe at random.
It took an hour for him to paint the constellations (northern hemisphere) onto the ceiling of their room. He wasn't stupid enough to not check the stuff actually glowed before he went ahead and completed his masterpiece, and to his delight his haphazard mixture was doing it's job!
The windows open to air the room, Sherlock wandered off to put together what would probably be the worst birthday dinner John had ever had. Cooking was nothing like chemistry, whatever anyone else said-
In all honesty, Sherlock had been a pretty terrible boyfriend today. He had woken John up with a kiss and a cup of tea as usual (had he wished him a happy birthday? he couldn't remember-) and he had then scampered off to get on with these preparations, wait for John to leave, paint the room and then resume messing up dinner. But it would be fine, right? It'd all come together in the end.
