Her mother bade her safe passage, with all the usual warnings of ‘staying out of trouble’ and ‘be careful’. Luke had hugged her, with a new affection of a father that she didn’t realize she missed. And Jace -- that had been the hardest goodbye. It was only for a moment, only for a couple hours as he wrapped up what was required of him in the Clave, but after everything that had happened -- his death and resurrection and the Mortal War, and even the revelation that he wasn’t her brother, and that loving him wasn’t an abomination -- the universe was keeping them apart. The only saving grace was that Simon was coming with her, for he certainly couldn’t portal by himself or overstay his welcome in Alicante. Clary was escorted to the edges of the city, right outside the gates. She used her stele to draw the proper portal runes, ones that matches the same symbols that were now covering her body. Iratzes for healing, which were newer, a deep black. The faded fearless rune, and clairvoyant sight. Although her most impressive and dangerous one was now on Simon’s forehead. She had told him not to mention to anyone,a secret that the two of them could share. Even at the cusp of returning home, she second guessed putting it there, and despite his hair that now covered it, she felt it was shining as a beacon, clear as day. She frowned only for a moment, then finished the ‘open’ rune, and a familiar portal appeared in front of them. It felt like a distant memory, her home in Brooklyn, but now that’s where they would be heading. Hopefully for some sense of normalcy. She fingered the Morgenstern ring on a silver chain -- it was Jace's and she refused to take it off since he gave it to her. Clary turned to Simon, offering up her hand. “Ready?” she asked with a smile. With Simon’s hand in hers, she stepped through the inky blackness of the teleporting portal. What should have been a solid landing on the hardwood floor of Magnus Bane’s apartment, Clary was caught off guard. There was an uneven shutter of Clary hitting the floor with awkward footing, and the awkward bump of her hitting a wall in a cramped hallway. What the..?. She spun around to look back at the portal, but it was no longer there. Simultaneously, Clary realized that Simon was no longer holding her hand. She was looking down a narrow stretch of a sleeping car of a train Fear rose up in her chest. Where was she? What happened to the portal? Where was Simon? How would she get back to Jace? Clary wanted to run, scream out for Simon, but instead she took hesitant step after another, her hand on the wall -- not for stability but for some odd reassurance that this train was real, and wouldn’t disappear from underneath her. Clary kept sneaking fearful glances over her shoulder, making sure no one was creeping up behind her as well. Despite her overly-cautious checking behind her, Clary missed the person walking directly in front of her, and collided with them. |
