In the Blink of an Eye

Summary: Hanna arrives
Status: Narrative
She'd been stalking an elk through the forest. There had been a blizzard for the past few days, and her food supplies were running low. She was glad to be out in the woods again, glad to see the sun and to smell the fresh air. She was glad to hunt. Glad to be alive, but most of all, glad to be left to her own devices. It was lonely, sometimes, with no one but the wolves for company, and some days she thought about moving away, but she wasn't quite ready yet. Soon, she thought she would be, but with no objective in her life anymore, she really wasn't sure what to do with herself. She could do anything, she supposed, but it seemed simpler to stay where she was. Hanna was not actively thinking any of these things as she shadowed the elk. Her bow was drawn, the arrow in place, and her pistol was tucked into her belt in case the arrow didn't kill the beast cleanly. There was no reason for it to suffer if her shot missed something vital. Her eyes closed, lashes touching in a blink, and when she opened them again she wasn't where she'd been. There was no snow, no breeze, no elk, no trees. There were walls, a bed, windows, doors. A shriek tore past her lips before she could stop it, and she very nearly loosed her arrow before she caught herself. Relaxing the string slowly, she stuck the arrow back into the quiver over her shoulder. Ice blue eyes roved wildly over the room, harsh pants of breath crossing her lips. She had been transported to foreign places before, but as part of a plan, and with her knowledge. This ... how did this happen? Was it a nightmare? Had something fallen on her head and she was now buried under a mound of snow, slowly freezing to death and having some weird dying dream? She didn't think so. She was stuck on any other explanations, however. Holding her bow loosely in one hand, Hanna looked around the room again. She saw several things that were unfamiliar to her, but one had writing on it. She lifted the note curiously, and then shifted her attention to the device. The note hadn't told her much, clearly, but the words on the device were even more confusing. Even though they all seemed to be in English, she asked her question in every language she knew, just in case. Unwilling to leave her weapons in the unfamiliar room, Hanna did however open her coat. It was warm in the room, but if she was suddenly going to be swept right back outside, she didn't want to be without her coat. Bundled up as she had been, she was sure she made quite the sight as she eased cautiously out of the room. She looked up and down the hallway before she started to walk slowly, snow falling in clumps from her boots as it melted in the warmer air. "Hello?" she called quietly. "Is anyone here?" |
