Barely days had past since The Doctor had seen Rose, but it didn't help. That had been Rose before they're adventures, when he'd thought he was saying goodbye forever. He'd always wished for one more chance to see her and despite knowing she was aboard the train she still eluded him. He was starting to run out of ideas. No matter how many times he walked the length of the train she was nowhere to be seen. It was as though the Fates were making a mockery out of their time together. Such a short time, they'd travelled, and yet when he looked back it felt like a lifetime. Well, in a strange kind of way it had been. Ironic that he, a Time Lord, didn't have enough time with the one person on Earth he would have liked to share it with. Not that he hadn't had companions since - and no doubt would again - but Rose was different. For the umpteenth time he knocked on the door the train claimed she shared with Jack. At least this time Jack seemed to be out. He'd already teased him enough about his search for Rose Tyler, but try as he might The Doctor couldn't shake the feeling that he was living on borrowed time. He had been brought here, as had many of his companions, and that couldn't be coincidence; The Doctor didn't believe in coincidence. If this was one last mission before his regeneration then he wanted to go out with a bang! Standing beside the people (and Jack) he valued most. Which would be a sorry line up without Rose. So many things about this train troubled him, but the most difficult to get his head around was Rose saying he'd been here before. Many times. Of course, without talking to her he couldn't find out if she meant other incarnations of The Doctor, or this rather tall, rubber-faced incarnation he'd grown so fond of. Either way he didn't remember the place, and given that his memory was exceptional, The Doctor was fairly sure he'd know 'Thomas' again if he were to see him. Which meant... oh, who was he kidding? Trying to work out what he was supposed to do here wasn't entirely his priority! The Doctor mooched along the corridor, deciding that he'd see what there was in the kitchen to eat, before working his way back along the train once more. The Doctor made it as far as the Dining Car. Sat up ahead, with her back to him, was a shape he'd know anywhere! Rose Tyler. Without realising it he shrank back into the doorway, content to watch her eat. She looked brilliant! It didn't matter that he couldn't see her face - though he'd far rather see her face, but that would mean not watching her, and watching her was really quite lovely. But, The Doctor decided, a tiny bit creepy! He took a deep breath and put his best foot forward, moving quickly and purposefully towards her. "Hello Rose!" he greeted her with his brightest smile, "fancy seeing you here!" Oh she definitely looked better from the front. Though he wasn't entirely sure he was a welcome sight. Still, he soldiered on and sat down, "so what are we having?" The Doctor leaned in and looked at the sandwiches on Rose's plate, "oh lovely! Sardines! I haven't had sardines in years!" he told her as he brazenly stole one. |
