The fact that nothing horrible had shown up after the birds and wasps had left made Lily uneasy. For as long as she could recall, there had always been something going on on the train. Something unpleasant, for the most part. But there'd been no reports of hallucinations, or strange behaviors, or stray birds or wasps, and it worried her. She thought there was something decidedly wrong with the fact she'd be worried because things were finally peaceful. It simply felt to her as though they were waiting for the other shoe to drop, such as it was. Was it possible they were catching some sort of reprieve while the train plotted horrible, devious things to do to them? It was possible. For all that, it was likely. With nothing much to do but worry herself with her thoughts, Lily had taken a book and retreated to the observation car. Severus was (or had been, last she'd checked) brewing a potion, and she didn't want to interfere with his concentration. It had gotten too dark to read though, so she'd set her book across her lap and simply gazed through the large glass windows at the forest they were currently passing through. She saw flickers of lights -- fireflies, she guessed -- and she smiled a little. She could remember a time that seemed a million years ago when she and Tuney would catch fireflies. They'd been ... young. So young, and so innocent. For a moment, Lily ached for that time again. A time before a war had forced her to grow up, before she'd had to make difficult, adult decisions about relationships and ... even what reality she'd be staying in, should the opportunity rise. So much had changed in the past few months. She'd changed. She'd seen the people around her grow and change and adapt to the things the train was throwing at them. She'd watched perfect strangers band together to confront difficulties, and a faint, sad smile crossed her lips. Shifting her weight in her seat, Lily leaned forward a little as the scenery passed by, the firefly twinkling away. |
