Who Remus Lupin and Sirius Black
Where Dining Car
When Back-dated to Wednesday night.
Summary Rekindling the epic bromance. Jealous?
Rating/Warning
Status Closed/In-Progress

Remus wasn't sure if he was a little bit early for their dinner 'date' or if Sirius was a little bit late. He wasn't exactly nervous about seeing his old friend now that he was aboard the train, but knowing about the year that Black was from, he was a bit concerned about hos his friend might find him. He wasn't as young as he used to be and that meant a lot when you were a werewolf. He was tired now, almost all the time, and while that was something he could hide when communicating over net posts, seeing his old friend face-to-face didn't provide quite the same luxury.

Remus sat, toying with the corner of the napkin beneath his cutlery and thought a little bit about the conversation he'd had with Lily and the fact that James wasn't here, and Harry was. He supposed it would be smart of him, and considerate, to try and talk to the younger Potter and see how he was fairing with all that was going on, but since he knew so little himself, he did suppose that it wasn't quite his place. He'd find Harry, certainly, but right now he'd made Sirius his priority.

The man he knew, the Sirius, but all but mentally shattered from his imprisonment in Azkaban and then his self-imposed imprisonment in the Order of the Phoenix HQ which also happened to be the childhood home which Sirius had once-upon-a-time so despised. Remus couldn't help but hope that for one reason or another, he'd find Sirius in much better health and better spirits here on the train.

The difference between that Sirius and this one was not simply the matter of seven additional long years in Azkaban. The additional time in prison hadn't helped, certainly, but this Sirius showed signs of the man he would become - the start of early wrinkles at the eyes, a certain shaggy leanness reminiscent of a stray dog. There was a wildness to him, too, hints of a sort of desperation that he'd lacked even in the worst days of the first war. But. On the face of the bearded man coming through the doors, there was something that older Sirius Black, the one who felt re-imprisoned in his family home, lacked.

Hope. This Sirius had hope for his own future. He didn't have to hide. People he'd never expected to meet - or to see again - were arriving by the day. Hope made all the difference. He may have been dangling on the edge of a breakdown, but he'd caught himself before the cliff.

Sirius probably looked a little better than the unhappy man Remus knew in his time. On the other side of the coin, Remus looked worse than the young fellow old Padfoot remembered. He hadn't expected the change, which in retrospect was foolish. Of course Moony would have aged. Of course he'd look tired. He was more than a decade removed from when Sirius had last seen him, and the war was back on. But then, Sirius had never been the best at perspective-taking. He blinked in surprise.

And then he covered by rushing the rest of the way into the car with a greeting. "Hello, Professor," Sirius joked. "Am I fashionably late, or just the ordinary variety?"

Remus gave Sirius a look. It was the very same slightly vanquished expression that he might have passed at Sirius were he to have called him Moony in public or perhaps, reaching back even further, when during their school days Black made some kind of comment about how Lupin 'ought leave his prefect badge in the dorm room. It was, as it had always been, followed with a quick smile and a shake of Lupin's head before he reached up to tuff his fluff of blonde hair and get up from his seat to give Black a hug.

It didn't matter, really, that he'd been with Sirius in the Phoenix's headquarters just a bit earlier that day because it felt...different somehow. He loved him, of course he did, but he missed the man he used to know and this younger, brighter person in his arms seemed a whole lot more like that person. It was overwhelming, and Remus barely knew how to start processing what it was he was feeling.

"I'll forgive it this time." He snorted, actually finding it difficult to want to let the other man go and so he didn't. Lupin was vaguely aware that this meant the hug may have travelled a touch into uncomfortable-length-of-time territory but he really didn't care. That's what Sirius got for being brilliant and being late. "But it'll be detention if this keeps up, Mr. Black."
