"You look lovely."

Torlin half-turned to look away from the full-length mirror, over her shoulder to the sweet calm voice of her handler, Carol. "You think so?" she asked with a little smile, looking back at her reflection. It was a pretty dress, one she'd picked out of a catalog just for this occasion as soon as she'd finished taking the program's tests. It was shin-length and spaghetti-strapped with an empire waist, a very light purple shift with white crochet layered over it, so the color peeked through the knit holes. She'd paired it with some purple peek-toe heels -- she hoped her groom wasn't terribly short, but Torlin figured she could always kick them off -- and curled her dark hair. With just the lightest smattering of makeup and a light perfume ... she felt pretty.

Carol, in a smart suit with her blonde hair tucked up into a bun, walked over and put her hands on Torlin's bare shoulders, smiling at her. She was a bit older, married for a little while now, and had been perfectly playing the mother-figure so far. "He'll be blown away," she assured her charge, whose smile was a tad bit shaky around the edges. Carol checked her watch. "Not long now. Don't you worry darling, it'll be wonderful."

The rhythmic sound of the helicopter touching down on the helo-pad always brought a flood of people outside. The first was the landing security detail. More than once, rebellious protesters had overwhelmed the retrieval teams. A few of them had even succeeded in flying the helicopter back to the island and faking the confirmation code. They sometimes attempted to mount an assault on the tower, trying to bring down the EMP fence.

CO James exited onto the tarmac himself this time, along with the paramedics. Word had been that the little lady they had scooped up out of the slums today had been injured in the extraction. Just a few bumps and bruises, he'd been told. Still, his team was fine so he didn't sweat a drop in the unseasonably hot spring sun.

At his shoulder stood a woman in a smart blue business suit. She was as tall as he was but so willowy thin that he was surprised she stood firm against the wind of the chopper blades. She was Officer Briggs' handler and she had presented herself down at the security tower looking for her charge less than half an hour before. CO James hadn't seen a reason to radio over this bit of news. He would just hand Briggs off when the woman got off the chopper.
