"I've got it!" Ace practically howled as a coworker ordered her to do something for what seemed like the fiftieth time in five minutes. The cafe was packed and Ace was irritated, grinding her teeth each time the bell over the door sounded. She ran hither and thither taking orders, making coffee, serving customers and receiving glares. Going back into waitressing had certainly not been the smartest move she had ever made. Already she had come far too close to exploding at customers who were too rude for their own good. The only thing that kept her sane was her now oft-mentally repeated mantra of It's money, it's money, it's money. Couldn't get that without working. Things had been so much easier when she had been traveling with her Doctor.
Of this new Doctor she hadn't seen hide nor hair since he had given her a key over a week before. She had half-heartedly looked for the Tardis but had not seen it, though she wasn't terribly worried. If he were going to abandon her he probably wouldn't have left her a key to a time-hopping spaceship. Besides, there was always a tiny slim minuscule chance that her own Doctor would return for her. Ace tried out the "invisibility" powers of her key a few times, delighting in her ability to walk in busy places without attracting any notice at all. Granted, at the moment, the key was rather useless but she imagined there was always a chance it could be handy in the future.
"Ace! Take care of the register," the manager called out as Ace stepped away from one of the coffee machines just as a woman at the counter waved for her attention. Miss, pardon me, miss!" "Yes'm?" Ace asked wearily. "I don't think this milk is lowfat!" The woman waved a drink at her. "Ma'am all of our drinks use low fat milk unless you ask for something else, " Ace replied, trying to keep the annoyance out of her voice. "I know that!" the woman sneered, "And I ordered whole milk!" Ace stared at her, flabbergasted, "Then what's the problem?" "I've changed my mind. I want lowfat milk." "But... you ordered whole milk." "Don't argue with me! Make me another drink!" Ace turned away and closed her eyes, trying to calm herself. What she wouldn't give for some nitro-9 to just blow the whole place up.
