010: New Year's Eve and a Good Start to 1978
Peter looked around the empty platform at Hogsmeade Station and sighed. It was cold and drizzly, and he had half hoped Remus would come to meet the train. He sat on a bench, tired by the mere thought of the long walk up to Hogwarts. He'd only taken one bag home with him, though of course it was charmed with Wizard space to hold more. He knew he should get started, but he just stared at the wooden platform, chewing his lower lip.
Remus didn't think he was going to make it on time. In fact, he hadn't thought he was going to make it to the platform at all. He argued with a fellow prefect just before leaving the school about who should stay in the school and who should go to the train to "supervise" the students returning to school. In the end, Remus had finally won and bounded towards the train station a full ten minutes later than he'd planned.
It was easy to spot Peter on the platform once he arrived. Everyone else was bustling about, but Peter was just sitting there looking slightly miserable. Remus slipped around behind him, not caring that his wet hair was sticking to his face and forehead (he didn't mind being wet, and with the warming charm he cast, it felt like a cool spring shower, rather than winter rain), tapped one of Peter's shoulders, then slipped around to stand behind the other.
Peter looked up slowly and...saw no one. He ducked instinctively, because with Sirius that sort of thing was always followed by something disgusting or slimy in one's hair. When that didn't happen, he turned the other way and saw Remus. His face lit in a smile and he stood up, staring at Remus' face. "Hi."
Remus' smile automatically brightened at Peter's expression. It was nice. No one else looked at him like he'd just made their day by simply showing up. "Hi," he said. "I'm sorry I was late. I'm suppose to be doing Prefect stuff while I'm here, but..." He did a quick scan of the platform, then grinned back at Peter. "Everything looks good."
"Yeah, the trip was pretty quiet," Peter said. He lowered his voice, still smiling. "I'm incredibly glad to see you. I really missed you."
Remus grinned and leaned in a little. "I missed you, too. I thought about you a lot," he whispered. "I think James and Sirius are planning something tonight for New Years. All I know is that they have alcohol." Remus shrugged. "But... I'm just glad you're back."
"Alcohol is good," Peter said. He grinned. "Except hopefully we'll have a bit of time to ourselves first." He wanted to wrap himself around Remus and just cling to him and kiss him until they were both breathless. He bounced a little on his feet, suddenly feeling a surge of energy that had been missing nearly the entire holiday.
Remus had just started to worry again about how exactly he was going to tell Peter that he'd told James and Sirius about them. He somehow didn't think coming home to his friends suddenly knowing he was queer would be quite the welcome he wanted. Then again, the longer Remus waited, the weirder it would be for Peter once he found out. "Yeah. We can slip away, I'm sure," he said with a wink. "Come on," he added, attempting to blow a wet piece of hair out of his face, but having to push it away with his thumb. "Let's get inside."
Peter shouldered his bag and pulled his cloak a little tighter around him, walking just a little closer to Remus than they usually did. It was such a relief to see Remus again, even if Peter felt guilty about how relieved he was. He had escaped the dark silence of his home; his mother would have to go back to it after her holiday. Peter watched Remus out of the corner of his eye and tried not to think about anything but being here.
It seemed to take longer than usual to get up to the castle this time. Remus was sure it was because he was itching to touch Peter and kiss Peter and he just wanted to get Peter somewhere alone do he could do that. Passed James and Sirius in the common room, heading up to the dorm to drop off Peter's things, and Sirius couldn't help the mischievous gleam in his eyes to save his life. James looked near giggles. Remus frowned and ignored them, following Peter to the dorm to wait for him to unpack.
There wasn't much to unpack, but Peter managed to drag it out long enough that there came a moment when the dorm was empty. He grabbed Remus' hand and dragged him around to the far side of the bed, so they would hear someone come in before the person could see them behind the bed curtains.
"I have been dying to do this for days," he murmured, and kissed Remus hungrily.
Remus hummed into the kiss, melting against Peter immediately and wrapping his arms around Peter's waist. "Just days?" he whispered, kissing Peter again.
"Just the dying part," Peter said, laughing. "I just wanted it very much before that." He tugged playfully on Remus' hair and nuzzled his cheek. "Mmm, we can't spend that long apart ever again," he decided. "You'll have to come home with me over the Easter hols." He didn't even think his mum would mind, though he'd have to figure out how to explain things before then.
Remus chuckled, squeezing Peter closer to him. "I'd like that. I missed you." He turned his head to kiss Peter's temple. "Um... I... sort of have something important I need to tell you."
Peter grinned. "More important than kissing?" he asked, and didn't give Remus time to answer before kissing him again.
Remus kissed Peter back, his fingers going under the back of Peter's shirt. All he managed to get out was a simple "um" in between kisses.
Humming in pleasure, Peter slid a hand down to grope Remus' arse briefly before going to the small of his back. "I love you, Remus," he whispered.
"Um... Oh," Remus said, gasping slightly as Peter squeezed lower. "I love you, too." Remus kissed Peter, lips soft, then trailed a few kisses over Peter's cheek. "Um... promise me you won't be mad..."
"Promise," Peter agreed, licking Remus' earlobe.
Remus squirmed, his fingers curling against Peter's back. It was difficult to concentrate with Peter doing that, especially now that his cock was taking notice. "Mmph, Peter... We-- I-- Oh, don't stop."
"We could...get caught," Peter murmured. He sucked Remus' earlobe into his mouth, scraping his teeth just lightly over it. Merlin, this was fantastic after a fortnight apart. He fitted his hips against Remus'.
"Mmm, don't care." Remus tilted his head to make it easier for Peter to reach his ear, the felling of Peter's tongue and teeth racing through him and he shifted against Peter's hips with a groan. "Oh. I missed this. Missed you."
Peter laughed and slid his hand down to pull their groins together, panting in Remus' ear. "Missed you, missed touching you--God, Remus!" He felt so good holding Remus like this, and he was incredibly hard already. If only they didn't get interrupted. He rocked his hips against Remus', licking at Remus' neck.
"Oh, Merlin, Peter, Pete." Remus groaned and shifted again, biting his lip and sliding his hands down the back of Peter's trousers. Peter was warm and soft and just brilliant. "We-- either need to be quick or we need to move," he managed, amazed his could with the haze of desire in his head.
"Move?" Peter laughed breathlessly and pressed against Remus. "M'already close, mmm," he managed. He rocked against Remus again, pressing him back against the bedpost and sliding their erections against each other. "Need you--"
Getting trapped between the bedpost and Peter sent a thrill of excitement through Remus that went straight to his groin, and then Peter's hard length was pressed more firmly against his own. He only managed half a swear word before, he pulled Peter tighter him and thrust against him. "Yes, yes," he babbled, kissing Peter hungrily.
God, that was intoxicating. Peter scraped his teeth over Remus' jaw, pressing open-mouthed kisses along it and liking the way the rasp of stubble scraped his lips. "Love you, so good, Merlin, Remus--" he whispered between the kisses, quickening their movements. He was close, he was so close, straining towards release, and then he could feel his balls tightening, his muscles tensed, and he came, gasping and clutching at Remus.
Remus clung to Peter, hips sliding against Peter's in rhythm with one another, and then Peter was coming. Just knowing Peter was coming against him caused Remus' excitement to overflow, and soon Remus was joining him. "Gah, fuck," he moaned, milking the last of it against Peter's pliant body, and then melting back against the bedpost with a lazy smile. He ran his fingers through Peter's hair. "Mmm, glad to see you missed me as much as I did you," he muttered.
"Oh, yes," Peter mumbled, lowering his head to rest against Remus' shoulder. He kissed Remus' neck, feeling weak in the knees. "Missed you so much." He couldn't get comfortable, he knew that. The dorm wasn't private enough, especially not with so many people coming back today. He couldn't be arsed to care. He settled against Remus more comfortably, ignoring the damp spot on his trousers for the moment. "Love you." Love you, love you-- He wanted to say it over and over.
Remus grinned, although the haze was fading enough that he was growing more alert that they could have just been walked in on. There was something about Peter that made him forget to care about things like that sometimes. "Mmmlove you, too. Not allowed to leave me ever again," he whispered, twisting a lock of Peter's hair around his finger and giving it a playful tug.
Peter shivered happily and shook his head. "Never," he promised, and nuzzled Remus' neck. He stayed there for a moment, breathing in his boyfriend's scent, then sighed. "I suppose we ought to go down to the common room. Wait. You said you had something to tell me."
"Oh. Right. Um..." A sinking feeling hit Remus' stomach and washed away the warm, sated feeling he had just moments before. Oh, he shouldn't have gotten distracted. "You-- you promised you wouldn't be mad."
"Right." Peter pulled away a little and did a Scourgify, wondering why Remus thought he would be angry. "What is it, Remus?"
"Thanks," Remus said as Peter cleaned them up, then he looked at Peter intently. "I got ambushed... while you were away."
"Ambushed?" Peter blinked at him. "Ambushed how?"
"James and Sirius. They cornered me in the library. About--" Oh, God. Peter was going to be angry. Remus swallowed and tried to gather up his courage. "About you."
Peter's whole body went cold, then hot. He could feel his face flushing--but since James and Sirius hadn't hexed him the moment he walked in...Oh, God, and he hadn't told Remus about his mum... "Um. About me?" he said, stalling for time to think.
Remus tried not to cringe, but made a face anyway, half-way between expecting to be hexed and apology. "Erm. Yeah. About... us."
Shite, what could he say? Peter thought for a moment, then pulled Remus over to sit on the bed together. "They--wait, they asked you about us?" Merlin, had they really been that obvious about their relationship?
Remus turned to face Peter, chewing his lower lip. "They made a lot of implications. They knew. They threatened to give me a list of how they knew, but I told them first." Peter wasn't reacting badly, but Remus couldn't help but wish he had a hole to hide in.
Peter rubbed one hand over his face and then looked up. "They don't...hate us?" He found himself holding his breath, as he had when he had this discussion with his mum.
Remus look up at Peter, lips quirking slightly in direct opposition to the grimace still evident in his eyes. "Um... they didn't hex you first thing, did they? I'm... unscathed." He breathed a silent nervous laugh. "They bet money on it, actually."
Peter stared at him. "They bet on us! Merlin, even my mum--" Oh fuck. He snapped his mouth shut and then licked his lips. "Um."
Remus' eyes snapped up to Peter, suddenly wide. "W-what?" he asked, sounding a little desperate.
"Um." Peter coughed. "Well...you remember that one letter I sent you...where I got interrupted partway through?" He glanced at Remus and then away again.
Remus only blinked at him, hoping he was misunderstanding.
"She, ah." Peter rubbed his hand over his face again. "She. When we. You came for the--Dad's funeral." Oh, fuck, he sounded like an idiot. He took a deep breath and just forced it out. "She-noticed-how-different-things-were-a
Remus just stared at Peter as he talked, then swallowed and choked a little when Peter finished. Oh my God. She's going to hate me. She's never going to let me come over again. She'll probably-- oh God. "W-w--" Remus coughed. "What did... she say?"
Peter took another steadying breath and laughed a little. "That it was nice of me to admit it without her having to pull it out of me." He made a face. "It, well, sort of poured out of me, instead." He glanced at Remus. "I just love you so much."
Remus' expression went a little confused when Peter laughed. "I love you, too. She didn't care?"
"She said she'd been almost certain since we were in Glasgow together for Dad's funeral," Peter explained. "She said you've always been patient and careful with people, but you were just a little too, mm, solicitous was her word. And that she had found it quite endearing, which made it a little easier for her to understand what had happened. Which...she didn't really say she didn't care, but...she said she would get used to it." He looked anxiously at Remus.
Solicitous? Endearing? Remus wasn't sure whether to apologise for being obvious (he'd just wanted so badly to make things better for Peter), be mortified Mrs. Pettigrew knew, or be worried she'd never look at him the same way or that she wouldn't get used to it. He settled on a strange combination of those feelings, staring at Peter for a minute, then slumping against his shoulder. He buried his face in Peter's shirt. "Oh, Merlin, I need a fag," he finally said, voice muffled.
Peter let out a shaky breath and nodded. "Same here." He didn't move, though; he just glanced at Remus. "Mum seemed sad she wouldn't have grandchildren, but I don't really like sprogs anyway, you know? Don't think I would've wanted any. And she didn't tell me I'm going to burn in hell, which was the main thing I was afraid of." He turned his head to kiss Remus' hair. "We'll be all right."
Remus shifted a little closer and wrapped his arms around Peter. "God, you talked about grandchildren?!" Remus looked up at Peter, frowning a little. "She's never going to look at me the same way again," he blurted.
Peter slid his arms around him. "No, she just said she'd thought she'd have half a dozen grandchildren running around and I laughed and said that wouldn't have happened even if I liked girls. And anyway, she didn't treat me any different. I mean, I know I'm her son, but you'd think she would be different around me, too." He kissed Remus again. "And she said you were endearing, remember?" he whispered.
Remus kissed Peter back, still unsure how to feel at all. He laughed a little, and then kissed Peter again, not knowing what to say. After a minute, he remembered where they were and pulled back. "I guess... I dunno."
"It'll be all right," Peter promised. "And our friends are all right with it, too, yeah? So...it's all right." He felt better about having told Remus, but he also felt bad that Remus seemed so upset about it.
"I guess that's everyone. Everyone that's important," he said, ignoring the stab of guilt he felt at not including his dad in that. His dad was important, but he very much doubted that Elphias would take this as lightly as Peter's mum had.
Peter sighed. "Yeah. Let's go have that smoke, yeah?"
"Reeeemus! Peeeeter! Where aaaare you?" Sirius' voice floated up the stairs towards the dormitory.
Peter sighed and moved a bit away from Remus. A moment later James and Sirius pounded into the room, James calling, "We've missed you, Peter!"
Remus laughed as Sirius pounced on Peter's bed and mussed his hair. "Yes, but Moony has been a positively miserable, mopey bastard."
"I don't mope, thank you." Remus leaned back against a bedpost and put his feet up in Peter's lap with a playful grin. "And anyway, you promised you wouldn't say anything until I told him."
"Say anything about what?" Sirius countered, doing a shoddy job of trying to look innocent.
"Have you told him?" James asked, looking curiously at Peter.
"Yes."
Sirius shrugged. "Well, see, no worries then."
Peter snorted and shoved at Sirius, but he wasn't really upset. He supposed now the teasing would return sevenfold, but at least they didn't hate him and Remus.
"How was Christmas?" he asked the other Marauders in general.
"Ohh, Wormtail, it was sooo loooonely without you!" James moaned, swooning across the bed as Sirius snickered. Peter considered shoving him off the bed.
"This is what I've been living with without you," Remus said blandly.
Peter glanced at him, wondering if Remus would help him shove James off the bed. He pushed off his shoes, planted a foot in James' ribcage, and began extending his leg.
Remus slid his feet off Peter when he moved and started to laugh, just as James shouted, "Oi, what're you-- ATTACK!"
Without hesitation, Sirius pounced on Peter and Remus scrambled up to the headboard to get out of the way, still laughing.
Grinning and giggling, Peter pushed hard with his feet while still trying to fend off Sirius. He ended up taking a thump in the ribs, but managed to keep Sirius from actually tickling him, for which he was extremely grateful.
"Remus! Help!" he cried, still giggling.
James hit the floor with a thud and Remus' laughter became uncontrollable, until he was near tears from it. He could barely catch his breath, let alone help Peter, but when he heard James' "ow," he peered over the edge of the bed. "You all right, mate?"
And with a yelp of surprise, he went hurtling off the edge of the bed too when James grabbed his wrist and yanked. "Not so funny when it's you, is it?!" James roared, his eyes dancing with mischief.
Sirius finally got past Peter's guard and tickled him mercilessly, provoking a shriek from Peter. At that, Sirius burst into laughter. "Merlin, Moony, you've turned him into a girl!"
Peter jabbed him in the stomach. "Sod you," he managed between gasps for breath.
Remus was laying on his back laughing, but he slowed at that exchange, then sat up to look at Sirius from the ground. "I know a hex that makes it feel like ten people are tickling you. I could try it out and see how manly you still sound," he said loftily.
Peter snickered and shoved Sirius off him. "That's right," he agreed. "Like to see you stand up under that, Black."
Sirius flopped over and grinned. "All right, maybe you're not a girl," he conceded. "Most of the time."
Not really bothered, Peter stuck two fingers up at him and rolled over to peer at Remus and James.
James sprang from the floor and flopped down in the empty spot between Sirius and Peter when the tussle broke up and Remus scanned the bed for an empty spot not filled with lounging Marauders before deciding the floor was all right. He gave Peter an affectionate look, which immediately earned a retching noise from James. "Could you not look at each other like that before dinner?"
Peter snorted, amused. "As if we haven't had to put up with your mooning about over Evans for years. You can put up with us looking at each other. Git."
"Oh, Merlin, Lily's back, too, isn't she? I knew there was something else I wanted to do." James started to get up and Sirius dragged him back down, which was lucky, considering Remus was thinking about tripping him if he tried to walk out.
Grinning at Sirius, Peter looked back at Remus. "Was it horrible, Remus?" he asked sympathetically. "Did you want to scream every time he mentioned Evans' name?"
Sirius barked a laugh and chimed in. "Did we think about writing to Evans and begging her to send him a Christmas present? Did we threaten to stuff dirty socks in his mouth to shut him up?"
"I was half tempted to fling myself from the Astronomy tower," Remus teased.
"I'm wearing her down; you'll all see," James said adamantly, pouting a bit.
"Right, mate," Sirius said, patting his shoulder. "You just keep on telling yourself that."
