In the end, most people die for nothing. Even people who think they're dying for something. It's rarely the death itself that has meaning. Whatever they did, if it had meaning, it would have been just as meaningful if they survived. Anything else is just a comforting lie we tell ourselves to justify our decisions and the ways in which we use other people. They didn't die for nothing, or I won't die for nothing.
But they probably did, and we probably will, too. Most lives aren't stories with satisfying endings. There's no shame in that.
