It had started when his concentration broke at the sensation of water nudging him, then it smeared his circle which shattered the protection he was using to channel the magic in the first place. Coupled with the increased strain from the violent storm outside and the fact that his nose had been bleeding for the better part of an hour (a culmination of the headache that had started in the middle of the day, meaning Luke had to reach out earlier than intended, asking for and then taking the life energy from the plants that had been assembled, giving him a temporary boost to help him last) meant that as the waves came crashing in, Luke was no longer in a position to support or protect the lower floors.
The water was already knee high, meaning that he was floating on the water already, trying his best to hold it together but the strain was too much, and the barrier he’d created shattered like spun sugar as his consciousness just fled, eyes rolling back in his head as he sunk under the water.
Roman didn’t consider himself much of a hero so unless he was called on he wasn’t about to dragon out for just anyone or anything and honestly when the water broke through he immediately made tracks for Luke. Luke who was probably pushing himself too hard because that’s exactly the sort of thing the kid would do but thankfully Roman was here with him now and could take care of him.
Hell, he’d been looking after him for most of his life after all.
He arrived just in time to rescue Luke from the depths of the flood water and with the younger man clasped in his arms he waded through the water logged corridors until he was able to reach dry ground which was honestly fleeting at best.
Roman did a quick check on Luke’s breathing and airways and when he was confident the kid wasn’t about to drown he set him up in the recovery position and settled down to keep watch, fully soaked and not enjoying the experience in the slightest.
Luke was still for a while, then he coughed and spluttered, jerking upright with dried blood crusted under his nose and over his top lip. He scrubbed at it with a damp sleeve, eyes searching for who had grabbed him from the water as the last thing he remembered was water and darkness. The world around him was silent, eerily so, and he lifted his hand to touch where he knew his ear pieces were but they were waterlogged so had shut off to protect them.
Fuck.
When his eyes fell on Roman after a desperate moment of panic, Luke’s whole body seemed to sag in relief and he moved closer, limbs shaking with exhaustion, until he could flop down next to the gentle giant who had been more of a parent to him than anyone else in his life.
[Thank you] he signed, [Are you ok?]
Roman offered Luke a soft reassuring smile that lacked his usually sharp teeth as he put his arm around the younger man and pulled him closer. Warm, comforting and affectionate. That was kind of Roman’s deal despite being an ice breathing dragon.
It was good to see him awake. Really good in fact. Made Roman feel a hundred times better. He was a lot of things but a healer he was not and it wasn’t like he could lay his hands on all the right medical supplies.
[I’m okay] Roman replied with his free hand. [Worried about you] Not a lie. [How are you feeling?]
Luke’s eyes tracked Roman’s hand and then he leaned in a little closer, letting out a slow breath and feeling the ache in his limbs fiercely. He waved his own dismissively and hummed a little. [Tired] he managed, [Head hurts.]
There was a moment, and then he signed, [I fucked up. Failed. I’m sorry.] He’d tried his hardest, but it hadn’t been enough. It never was. He shivered, soaked through and upset and sore. [Sorry]
Roman’s brows drew together when Luke apologised and said that he’d fucked up and tightened his arm when he felt Luke shivering. He really needed to get the kid warmed up and into some dry clothes, that would be the next step.
[Stop that, you did more than a lot of people and you could have been killed] It was remarkable what tone you could get from sign language but you could, you really could, it was just as expressive, if not more so than the spoken word. [So none of that, alright?]
He blew out a breath and rubbed his hand over Luke’s arm.
[We should find you some dry clothes]
[It still wasn’t enough,] he signed, [My best wasn’t enough. What would have happened to me if you weren't here?] It left a bad taste in his mouth that wasn’t just the sea water at the thought that no one else had thought about him.
Thank fuck Roman was there. Still, it didn’t feel good to know that no one had thought about him.
[Not sure anything in this place is dry. So can we just sit here for a bit?] His eyes stung. It was just the salt water, he told himself, and exhaustion. [I’m really tired.]
[Well, I am here, so you won’t ever have to worry about that] Roman assured Luke because he would literally die for the kid if keeping him safe took that sacrifice the same way he would for Koa or Gabe.
He tightened his arm around Luke and reached up to smooth his hand over the younger man’s hair as he gave a nod of his head.
[Okay, we can sit, for a bit. You can get some rest and I’ll be here when you wake up]
Luke hummed his appreciation, suddenly intensely relieved that he wasn’t alone right now and that someone who knew him and cared about him was here. He just nodded, wriggled closer and signed a quick [Thank you] before closing his eyes and breathing out slowly and shakily, curling his fingers in the soaked fabric of Roman’s shirt to ground him while he couldn’t see. Exhaustion permeated every single part of him in a way that made his whole body feel like it was made of lead and his head was spinning and throbbing in equal measure.
What a fucking mess.
