Jordan worked better at night. That sweet spot between ten and two when people were usually at the bar or climbing into bed or well-asleep already. In a small town like this, it was probably mostly the latter. She’d done a rush job on the signs in her bag, but your average person wouldn’t know the difference. They said out of order, temporarily out of service, and shutdown for repairs in a variety of official-looking fonts. Some had french translations, which she’d had to look up and double-check. (Hors d’usage sounded like a joke.) Her bag was already half-emptied, signs on every unoccupied machine she found. ATMs, vending machines, elevators, dryers at the laundromat. She slapped a tiny “broken” sign on one of those cheap plastic toy machines outside the grocery store and squinted down the street. A small bus was parked half a block down. Automobiles were technically machines, right? She smirked and stalked towards the vehicle. |
