RP Log: Rolf & Suzy Characters: Rolf Scamander and Suzy Capper Setting: Backdate yo! Late afternoon/Early evening, 19th December. Happy hour in a local tavern in Ayacucho, Peru. Summary: Attempts to take a break from mountains, jungles and dragons to get to know the friendly locals are thwarted when the locals...aren't so friendly. Rating/Warning: PG I suppose, gets a little rowdy to the end but not too much to warn.
Looking over the establishment, Rolf considered it pleasant enough and sat down on one of a pair of stools open at the bar. So far he thought their trip was going fantastically. It wasn't work, which to him was both nice and missed, but with Suzy he could still do things like trek into the jungles and visit the Preserve. Also, trying to convince her to hold one of the infant dragons really had been amusing. It also brought him into civilisation a lot more than he normally would have gone if he was on a work trip.
The bar was filled with a late afternoon crowd, thrifty drinkers taking advantage of the happy hour specials, and was a strong mixture of both locals and tourists. When the bartender finally meandered over Rolf went ahead and ordered for the both of them, two pisco sours. "It's the national drink," he explained, as the burly man walked away, "It's rather a requirement to try one of these when you visit. I promise. Sweet but stronger than you'd expect. "
Suzy had been having fun. After a week of trekking through the wilderness, she was adamant that they see people. She enjoyed the hiking and the camping, but Suzy liked people. She was a social person at heart. Also, being in a brand new place made her want to meet people. Different people than at home. Rolf had apparently known a good place.
They found their way to a bar, and while Happy Hour was still usually too early for Suzy to consider drinking, she was on vacation and really didn’t care. It looked like it was a little hole in the wall, but the outside was deceiving since the bar housed a lot of people. “National drink, huh? Stronger or Weaker than the stuff at home?” She asked good-naturedly, taking a playful smell of her drink. Well when in Rome… She took a healthy gulp of the cocktail. “That is really sweet.” She commented off handedly. “So, Rolf, what happens in Peru when people get crazy during happy hour?” She asked wondering if he knew, because that could be really interesting.
Rolf took a sip as he considered her question. "I'd imagine that it's much like anywhere else in the world," he answered evenly. "Ranging from the varied possibilities like public embarrassment, inappropriate flirting or even aggressiveness. Nudity is always an option. Or pranks and incarceration." He took another sip as he racked his brain for other cliché activities related to inebriation. "Not that I would know anything about it. I've just heard. Of course." Still keeping a straight face, he winked playfully.
She laughed. "Flirting is a good one. It's my favorite one actually. I'll have to find you a bird for thank you shags, since I can't do it." She said laughing as a large group of people came into the bar and started ordering drinks in Spanish. Unfortunately, Suzy hadn't learned Spanish, some French yes, but no Spanish. But the mixture of locals and tourists looked like it would definitely lead to an awesome energy for the night.
"Yeah," Rolf said, hoping that Suzy was kidding and not truly making plans to start setting him up. Or worse. Busying himself with his drink, he watched the group order their drinks, impressed the bar had grown so much in popularity since his last visit. "What about dragon cuddling? Errol looked like he was taking a liking to you and you still haven't held one. A few drinks, maybe?" Though he was attempting to change topics he felt it might be too much to point out that a few drinks could also make her a little more flammable. "A new cliché, what do you say?"
She almost gave him a stern look. She recognized that almost to blushing look he was getting, and he should know by now she was really teasing him. His next statement made her laugh. "No." She said quickly. "No dragon cuddling." It was a weird conversation to have in a muggle bar. If they were overheard no doubt they'd think it was weird drug or something. "They keep sneezing and setting the grass on fire." She said defending her position. She'd gotten fairly close, but actually holding one was something she hadn't been able to make herself do. Which was surprising since she was such an awesome sport for everything else. "Perhaps, a few more drinks. But I don't tend to think about dragons when I've been drinking, love." She said. "That's just you."
"Hey now," Rolf grinned at her teasing and tried to put on a look of hurt. "I think about things besides dragons. I don't have just a one-track mind you know," still playing up the Indignation he sniffed and took a sip from his glass. "Manticores and dugbogs and sphinxes. I think about them too. You should give me a little more credit." A grin crossed his face and shattered the hurt countenance he was trying for and he chuckled warmly.
Suzy couldn't help the smile that came across her face. "You're a real special sort of bloke. You know that, right?" She said warmly. She meant it. He'd make some girl really happy someday, granted she would run around the globe with him. Suzy just couldn't resist a pun with the word special in it. She drank down the rest of her drink, realizing how strong it actually was. When she ordered another the people who just entered the bar started playing some music and dancing. It wasn't one she knew, but it looked easy enough and fun. She took her drink when the bartender handed it to her and smiled. "Come on..." She urged grabbing his hand to pull him to the group.
"When you say special you really mean..." he started to ask, finishing his drink just in time to be grabbed and dragged off his stool. Dancing wasn't normally one of his strengths, he tended to sit back and watch, if given the choice. However, from the way Suzy was dragging him he quickly figured that this was one of the situations were he wasn't going to be given the chance. "Just to let you know, fair warning, dancing has never been my strong suit." He smiled hesitantly, feeling a little out of place dancing in the middle of a Peruvian bar.
"That's alright." She said laughing. She wasn't looking at him though. She was looking at the girl in beside her. After a couple of seconds she tried to repeat the motions of the girl beside her. "Ok I think I've got it." She said quickly, finally looking at him. Of course, she didn't. She didn't have it in the least, but it was fun, and really that was all that mattered. "I'm pretty sure I suck too."
Rolf watched her studying the actions of the woman beside them and laughed at Suzy's attempt to mimic them. "Yeah," he said, still chuckling. "Well, when you put it that way...I suppose I can't do any worse." He stared around for a moment, also watching before he made an attempt to dance with her. Dancing didn't come natural but at least observing did, he took her hands as he tried to a few steps he hoped were passable.
Watching Rolf concentrate to dance was a bit like watching a toddler try to draw his first straight line. Suzy was surprised she didn't see his tongue pop out of the corner of his mouth in concentration. Suzy herself was bad at dances where she was trying to learn the moves, but she thought she had a certain something when it came to just listening and moving. She smiled wildly at his dance and laughed when he grabbed her hand. She had a far thought that yes, he could do worse, but she pushed it away. "See it's not so bad!" She called out over the music. Over on the other side of the room she saw some men begin to pass around and dance around a sombrero.
"Uh huh," laughing along, Rolf just shook his head at her grin. "I'm impressed you can keep up with natural talent like mine." Devoting a share of his attention to his feet and their steps, Rolf was paying far more attention to himself and the men he was attempting to mimic than he was the Suzy and whoever might be across the room. He wasn't a natural dancer but he wasn't about to allow himself to start stepping on her feet or his own. "It's not as hard as you'd think," he added, attempting to sway his hips to the beat and not go red at the same time.
"No, it's not." she admitted, adding a spin (just for fun) into her moves. The sombrero was passed closer to them, while they continues with the dance that wasn't exactly what other people were dancing. With a laugh she grabbed the sombrero when it was passed to them, but since she didn't know the dance and was feeling a tad tipsy she pulled it down on her own head and spinned again. Suzy had a smile on her face when all hell broke loose. Before she knew it some people were arguing loudly in a language she didn't know and someone pulled the hat from her head. But they were yelling at each other? She wasn't quite sure, but she stopped dead in her tracks. "What the hell?" and that was said right before the first punch was thrown between a guy and the man who pulled the hat off of her head.
It took Rolf a moment to register what was going on, he'd been so into watching his own steps. Suzy abruptly stopped and he looked around, catching the fists flying just as Suzy yelped at them. Better off than Suzy, Rolf at least knew the language and understood, as best he could with so many different voices shouting, what was going on. He stepped between his friend and the disgruntled crowd, hoping he could make amends and get them to calm down. Granted they'd had a few drinks but a hat was a hat, no need to be unreasonable.
Suzy thought it was an overreaction, even if she didn't know what exactly was going on. She bit her lip as she watched everyone go crazy. This wasn't supposed to happen. Rolf stepped in front of her, but it didn't seem to get them to calm down any. It was then, that the one man took a running start at the other pushing him into a table and breaking it. Some people attempted to get them to stop fighting but they themselves go wrapped up in it. What was it about violence following her around? She pulled Rolf towards her. "Maybe we should get out of the way?"
This was what Rolf hated about drunks, it really exacerbated issues that, at any other point, would be easily handled. At least he was assuming, he hadn't actually encountered this problem before, sober group or not. Still attempting to calm the largest and closest of the upset men, Rolf was busy trying to cajole drunks when he felt Suzy tugging him back towards her. "I think that'd be a prudent mo-" Turning away toward his friend, Rolf started to respond when his attention was rudely jerked back to the squabble, along with his body. Drunk the Largest hadn't appreciated being ignored and was showing Rolf his lack appreciation by grabbing him by the scruff and pulling him into the fray.
Normally, Rolf liked to think he was a fit guy. He jogged most every day, kept in shape, ate well. And after years of trekking in jungles and mountains, a few months at a writing desk aside, dealing with large and often dangerous creatures it was hard not to end up strong enough to take care of yourself. However, caught off guard in a Peruvian bar by several drunk men who were at least twice his size, each, was enough to throw his advantages. And pulling out a wand in the middle of a Muggle bar was obviously not an option. Most of the attention turned on him and it only took a few minutes of scrambling before he took a fist to the jaw and was down for the count.
Suzy watched in slow motion as Rolf got hit and fell to the ground. Rolf was always a bit sturdy, and she really couldn't believe that one hit would knock him out. She quickly snapped herself into action, and attempted to pull Rolf out of the way of the fighting drunks. It was then that she sighed with relief when she saw the local law enforcement show up. They soon had everyone handcuffed, including Suzy herself, and her protests fell on deaf ears, whether they understood English or not.
--
Head throbbing, Rolf blinked his eyes open and pushed himself off the bench he was lying on, sitting up and looking around. Suzy was next to him, along with a number of other people he recognised from the bar. Nobody looked very happy. Looking back to Suzy, he fixed her with a Look. "Was the hotel really so bad?" He joked lamely, rubbing his jaw.
Suzy had been sitting down next to where Rolf was laying with her head against the wall. No doubt in the future she might find this funny, but right now it really wasn't a joking matter. She felt Rolf stir and sit up, and she groaned when he spoke. "Are you kidding?" She asked unable to keep in her very slight amount of amusement. She hit his arm. "I have no idea what the bloody hell happened? They probably won't keep us for long though." She said hopefully. "I'm never reaching out for a sombrero ever again." She muttered.
"I think that's probably for the best," Rolf agreed, leaning forward and trying to look out of the cell, hoping on officer was passing by so he could at least explain and get them back. "But, cmon, this isn't so bad, right?" He smiled at her, aiming to at least help her calm down and relax a little. It wasn't like they were being sentenced, they were just stuck in a holding cell until they could sort everything out. "How often to you get such an authentic experience in another country? Usually it's all sightseeing and tours, right?" Watching her reaction he chuckled, albeit nervously, and quickly hopped up to go over to the door and try to get some attention. He'd already gotten hit enough for one day, he didn't need Suzy to add to his count.
