You probably already know una broma in its basic meaning of a joke.
Spanish: hacer una broma a alguien
English: to play a joke on someone
Broma is used in lots of phrases with prepositions which it's worth getting to know. First, en broma:
Spanish: No saldría con Luisa, ni en broma.
English: No way would I date Luisa.
Spanish: Te lo dije en broma, hombre, no te aflijas.
English: I only said it as a joke, don't get upset.
Then:
Spanish: El jefe hoy no está para bromas.
English: The boss isn't in the mood for jokes today.
