Magnus was sitting in the common room. He had heard about Professor Stonem and how Winnie had found her and immediately decided to plant himself near the common room door so that he could hug her as soon as he saw her. He felt so awful about the whole thing. But more than that, he was getting nervous. Not for himself - but for everyone else. He was a half-blooded as they came and so was Winnie, but there was Sebastian to think about, and the younger and older students. He almost jumped out of his armchair when the common room door opened, though he had done that twice already and it hadn't been Winnie either time. To say Winnie was distraught would be an understatement. She'd been a mess when Olwen had found Jane, and she was even worse off now. Madam Robins had nearly ordered her to the hospital wing too, but she'd swallowed down her hysterics long enough to bolt for the She came through the Common Room entrance with red eyes and cheeks, sniffling miserably and trying to avoid talking to any of the small crowd of people knotted in the Common Room and whispering anxiously. Until she saw Magnus that is, and she immediately burst into fresh tears. When he saw that it was Winnie and not just some first year he was inevitably going to startle, he took too long steps towards her, wincing at the tears and stretching out his arms to go in for the hug. He couldn't imagine how she was feeling, having to see her professor like that, and Stonem had always been so nice. So he wrapped her up in his "Are you all right?" he asked unnecessarily. Over the years the students in the Common Room had grown used to seeing Magnus and Winnie often cuddling on one couch or another so this wasn't anything particularly new, however Winnie wasn't usually sobbing as she held onto the big burly boy. She buried her face in his shoulder and wrapped her arms around his neck as he held her, feeling reassured and safe for the first time since she'd found Professor Stonem. "It was aw-- awful," she said, groping for a handkerchief to wipe her eyes and her nose. "Terrible. She was just staring, and standing there." Magnus sighed and nodded, stroking Winnie's fiery red hair gently and planting a kiss on top of her head as she fumbled and sobbed. This nonsense was getting overwhelming, and Magnus wasn't usually easy to overwhelm at all. "I'm so sorry you saw that, Win," he whispered. But he remembered what Dippet had said about them finding the cure. "But remember? The Healers figured out how to fix it!" he said. That was maybe a bit more optimistic than reality, but he like the optimism. "They said everyone will be cured soon. And it'll be fine. All right? So don't cry." Winnie nodded and tried to quiet herself and it did help, knowing that, but even more so was Magnus' comforting presence. He was one of her best friends and somehow that helped more than anything. "I know," she said. But what if they didn't? She snuggled closer, her shoulders shaking as she tried to catch her breath. "I wish I could understand why this keeps happening," she told him. She closed her eyes and rested her head on his shoulder, her small form finally relaxing as her crying ceased. "When are they going to stop?" Who the they was she still didn't understand, but she knew it had to be someone. One of the older students, perhaps. Everyone said it was because people were Muggleborns and that scared her. Because it seemed so random and cruel. Sighing, he nodded. "Someone is just a total wanker," he said quietly. He couldn't think of another way to describe the person hurting so many people for no apparent reason. And now Winnie was upset and he couldn't think of anything to do. It was just awful. "I hope they stop soon. Or they get caught." He nuzzled her head. "Do you want to skip dinner and sit here or should we go down?" he asked. Winnie nuzzled him back, a bit like a cat rubbing against its favorite person, and then stretched up to give him a kiss on the cheek. "You'll get hungry," she said quietly. "You know you will. And I don't want you starving because of me. We can go down but I want more cuddles when we get back. Okay?" "All right." Dislodging from Winnie, he pulled her off the couch by her hand and smiled. "We'll walk together and sit together at dinner," he said with a smile. "We all need to eat, after all. It'll help you feel better!" Winnie wasn't sure how much she would eat, but she would try. "I can always give you what I can't eat," she said. She squeezed his hand. "You're a growing boy." As they stopped by the portrait hole she stood up on tiptoe and gave him another hug. "Thank you," she whispered. "No problem," he said with a hug. "I love you Win." |
