Myles knew every reason he shouldn't be out alone. He'd heard, again and again, why everyone and especially Muggleborns needed to be accompanied by someone else at all times, and he knew that there were good reasons for it. But it hadn't done Grizel any good. It hadn't done Jane Parker any good. Myles was seventeen years old and tired of feeling like a burden to those around him. If he wanted to go for a walk, he'd go for a walk. He didn't want company. His last outdoor walk hadn't gone so well, after all, and he'd had company for that. He wouldn't be gone long, anyway. He just needed to clear his head, and he didn't know many other people who enjoyed Scotland winters. He was hardly an outdoorsy person, but much worse than being outside was being stuck inside with no recourse. Even if he'd wanted company, he couldn't imagine anyone else would want to be out there with him. He didn't even intend to pick fights anymore; they simply happened, and tonight's were no exception. Myles tried to treat this walk as a break. A chance for him not to worry about the attacks, the wars, being Muggleborn, being hated by those around him, studies, Aloysius, Grizel, anything. It failed, obviously, and he found himself just as tense and burdened as always, just colder. It was already rather dark, but he didn't notice the descending freezing fog until it was all around him. The castle seemed far away, and he knew that despite his desire to remain alone for even a few minutes longer, it was time to go in. He wrapped his scarf tighter as he shivered from the cold. He even lit his wand to illuminate the ground around him; Myles didn't know how to fix a twisted ankle on his own and didn't want to deal with the embarrassment of finding help when he oughtn't have been out alone to begin with. It had been hard enough to sneak away from Ravenclaw without someone at least vaguely warning him he shouldn't go anywhere alone. He planned to just slip right back in. Madam Robins had agreed, after some pleading and promising, to give Myles a mild sleeping potion. He couldn't remember the last time he'd gotten a proper night's sleep, tossing and turning with worry and ideas bouncing around his head every night and early morning, and frankly, he was quite looking forward to this potion. The fact was, he hadn't felt happy and he hadn't felt safe since Grizel was attacked, and if he needed a potion to bring him that again, even temporarily, he was willing to try it. The Lumos he'd cast helped illuminate the ground only inches away, but seemed to reflect the fog and make it even thicker. By the time Myles was back to the castle, it was so thick he could only see a few feet away with any confidence, and anything beyond that reflected back unclear and hazy. He was surprise, when he got back to the outer doors of the castle, to find one of them open. He thought he saw some kind of movement and raised his lit wand on instinct to see, but all it did was make it even harder to see through it all. He called out a tentative "Hello?" to no response. He shivered again and stepped toward the door. He squinted, but once his eye caught the flash of yellow through the fog, it didn't matter anymore how cold it was. Obviously, Myles will not be back in Ravenclaw for curfew tonight. In fact, he'll not be found until tomorrow morning and you'll know when. Feel free to have your characters speculate on his absence in the meantime, however! |
