WHO: Samuel Abbott and Elizabeth Hale
WHERE: One of Lizzy's preferred nooks for embarrassed crying
WHAT: Comfort
WHEN: Friday
STATUS/RATING: A for adorable!
Lizzy sniffled and hugged herself tighter as she took a deep breath. Myrtle was just being Myrtle, she didn't need to be so upset about it. But that kiss had just been a mistake. She had just gotten carried away. Reginald was an ass, too. She had said cheek. And, well, she hadn't hated it. But she felt so bad and she could barely say anything to Matty, she doubted he wanted to hear a billion apologies. So she had ran and hid behind an old tapestry of a goblin riot, her usual crying spot, and took a deep breath. "Ugh," she muttered. Sam knew most of old Lizzy's preferred hiding spots and, after checking a few of the others, heard her crying, tucked away behind the wall tapestry. He grimaced at the brutal depiction as he drew it aside and took a deep breath before plunging forward. "Liz," he said sharply. Not to reprimand her or not to startle her, but just to grab her attention. He reached out and brushed her shoulder. Sam knew girls likely preferred to be left alone in their misery at times like this but, well, Sam wasn't going to let that happen. Lizzy looked up and her lip trembled a little at the sight of Sam. Blinking away tears, she tried to force herself to smile. It was nice of him to hunt her own and she loved having him watching her back like he always did. "Hi Sammy," she said, but without an invitation she grabbed him into a tight hug, taking a deep breath and trying not to cry anymore. "I'm all right, no worries!" she said without prompting. He stumbled backward from the force of her rushing at him, but quickly recovered and wrapped his arms around her. Perching his chin atop her head, he let her hug him and hide away, even if she was saying she was all right and not to worry. "'Course you are," he said in a low mumble. He forced a smile of his own, to make himself sound light and cheerful. If she was going to pretend she wasn't upset, he was going to let her come out with it on her own terms. "Our Lizzy's always all right." She really smiled that time, though he might not have seen it from where she had buried her face in his chest. Sam was always a great hugger. It occurred to her that he might not have been one of the witnesses of her little moment and was only there because of Myrtle's unkind words. She thought about explaining, but it caught in her throat. "Myrtle's just such a..." she struggled to think of a word that wasn't too harsh. "She's just so mean sometimes." "Aye, she's a bully, through and through," he agreed. While he agreed that it wasn't nice, the way in which others spoke of Myrtle Waddelcock, he couldn't agree that she didn't sometimes make herself unlikable purposefully. Things such as this happened with alarming frequency and Sam couldn't really understand why anyone would want to cause misery like that. He also found it hard to understand why others would be unfaithful but it wasn't his place to judge what had happened; for one, he hadn't been there and Myrtle could have been dramatically distorting what had happened, and he had no insight into the agreement that Lizzy and Matty had made when they decided to see each other. Exclusivity might not have been part of it, for all he knew. But Sammy knew that Lizzy didn't ever purposefully hurt people; even though Myrtle had humiliated her and tried to ruin her relationship with her writing, Lizzy couldn't call the other girl names. Sam respected that a lot. "You'll be all right," he promised, though he knew no such thing. "This'll pass." Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath and finally released Sam from her clutches to wipe her eyes. She didn't hate Myrtle, mostly, even though she was an exasperating girl to be around at times. This hurt, though, because Lizzy hated feeling like the center of bad attention. "It was just..." she took a deep breath. "It's so stupid, too, that's the worst part. Reginald kissed me. I told him the cheek and well...it didn't happen like that. And everyone was watching, and ugh. Matty's got to be so irritated with me." She hadn't spoken to him much since that had happened, and she dreaded to hear what he had to say. "Right," Sam said, his brow furrowed. He could have a word with Lockhart. Sure, the man's sister wound up the same as Grizel and was in the hospital wing, but he couldn't go around kissing girls like that and stirring up a fuss. And Matty... Well. Sam didn't know how Matty felt. He'd been doing other things when he saw what Myrtle had written and dropped it all to make a beeline for finding Lizzy. He hoped this wouldn't ruin friendships and relationships. Sam kept an arm around Lizzy's shoulders as she wiped at her face and sighed and he looked at her askance. "Who knows? Matty's reasonable. You told Lockhart the cheek and he didn't listen. Everyone saw that. He can't argue with facts." Lizzy's shoulders slumped a little but she was out of tears. Things had been going well with Matty, this was just stupid. He probably wasn't even upset. Or he would never admit to it. And Lockhart, well. She had just been coming around to him and now she had a reason to go firmly back to hating him. "I know. It's just. Well I did kiss back, for a second. And it was nice. So I just feel really guilty," she said with a sigh, rolling her eyes at how silly she sounded. She wasn't a fifth year, it had just been a (really really really good) kiss. "I'm sure I'm just upset for no reason." "'Course," Sam said again. "Nothing to feel guilty over. You didn't have any control in it. It's all on Lockhart, really. Kissing Friday's nothing to be fussed over." "Thanks, Sammy." She bit her lower lip for a moment. "I'll talk to Matty. Everything will be fine, right? It's just a stupid holiday." She hoped that would be enough to keep everyone off her back for kissing Reginald, at least. "Aye, it'll all be fine," he reassured her as he steered her away from beneath the tapestry. "Come on, let's go back to the common room. I'm sure there's a game we can play or something to pass the time 'til Matty comes back in, unless he's already there." Sam was just talking now to fill up the space. It was almost like babbling, only not quite. "You don't want to muck about in the corridors. Never know who's lurking 'round." "Thanks, Sammy." She squeezed him again and smiled. Lizzy thought that no matter what happened, having friends like Sam around would make it easy to endure. "You're the best." |
